CEE Departmental Visit - SKH Kei Hau Secondary School (14 Feb)

25 students from SKH Kei Hau Secondary School visited CEE department on 14 Feb 2023 (Tue). Dr Siwei Liu, Assistant Professor, shared the recent development of the civil engineering industry and introduced the admission information of BEng(Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development.   Students formed groups to compete in the “Tower Challenge: Engineering with Straws, Tape and Imagination”. The best performed group built a tower of 79cm high.   Apart from the programme talk and workshop, students also visited our Structural Engineering Research Laboratory.

Career Talk for Structural and Fire Engineering Programme

A career talk for Structural and Fire Engineering Programme was successfully held on 20 Feb 2023 (Mon), attracting 50 students attending the seminar. We are honored to have Ir Dr Young Wong (Director of Arup) and Mr Tsang Sau Kit Wilson (Professor of Practice, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) to be the guest speakers and deliver the career talk to students. Both Ir Dr Wong and Mr Tsang are professionals in the fire engineering discipline, they shared their career experience from a fire engineer’s perspective and their insight on the career and prospect of fire engineers in the Hong Kong Construction Industry.

CEE PhD Students Awarded 2023 IACIP Outstanding Graduate Student Award

Congratulations to Ms Linyi Yao and Mr Danning Li, PhD students of CEE who are supervised by Dr Zhen Leng, for being awarded the 2nd prize and 3rd prize of 2023 IACIP Outstanding Graduate Student Award respectively, in the 2023 International Association of Chinese Infrastructure Professionals (IACIP) Annual Workshop.

Visit of Prof. Mohamed A. Meguid, McGill University, Canada

Prof. Mohamed A. Meguid, Chair of Department of Civil Engineering at McGill University, Canada, paid a visit to CEE on 17 February 2023 (Friday). During the visit, the collaboration between the two departments, including undergraduate and postgraduate exchange programmes, were discussed.  Prof. Meguid also had a research meeting with CEE Geotechnical Unit to explore ways to enhance research collaborations in area of strength at the two departments.

20230215_CSCS Science and Technology Award

Prof. Kwok-Fai Chung’s Project received Grand Award of the CSCS Science and Technology Awards 2022

Congratulations to Prof. Kwok-Fai Chung, Director of CNERC, whose project, titled “Basic Theory, Key Technology and International Application of Chinese High Strength 690MPa Steel Structures”, has received a Grand Award of the Chinese Steel Construction Society (CSCS) Science and Technology Awards 2022. The prize was presented during the Opening Ceremony of the Annual Conference of CSCS on 10 February 2023 in Guangzhou. The Grand Award is the highest honour among the CSCS Science and Technology Awards and PolyU is the only Hong Kong institution being awarded. The Project was successfully completed with academics from Tsinghua University and Imperial College London, and experts from famous consulting and construction companies in Hong Kong, which provided a comprehensive solution to innovative applications of high quality Chinese 690MPa steel in construction.

New joiner – Dr Tao Yong

Dr Tao obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Wuhan University of Technology in 2016 and 2021, respectively. He studied as a joint Ph.D. student at the University of California, Irvine in 2019-2021. He joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2022 and transferred to Research Assistant Professor in 2023. Dr Tao's research interests include mechanical and chemical properties and processes of cementitious materials, molecular simulation, force field development, etc. Dr Tao has joined us on 13 February 2023.

President’s Visit to CEE

The President and the Senior Management Team visited CEE on 7 February 2023.   The visit started with a laboratory visit and followed by a meeting to review the Department’s achievements, challenges and future plans under the scopes of teaching, partnership and research. Election to the Class of Fellow to the Environmental Discipline of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE)

Congratulations to Ir Prof. Dan Tsang, who had been elected as Fellow grade member (FHKIE) of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) - Environmental Discipline.  Bring recognized as FHKIE, Ir Prof. Tsang has achieved positions of responsibility to which he has brought superior knowledge and practice in the environmental engineering discipline. HKIE was initially founded in Hong Kong in 1947, to promote the professional standing, interests and technical standards of local engineers across a broad spectrum of engineering specializations.
