CEE Excels in Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023

CEE continues to excel in global rankings, with a remarkable progress achieved in three of our research areas, stated in the latest Shanghai Ranking league table. In the 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 (𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐒) 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 released by 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, CEE achieves 𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 and 𝟒𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 globally which all have again secured the 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠. This impressive achievement reaffirms our global excellence in education and research in the disciplines. Kudos to all CEE members who have consistently dedicated in the advancement of knowledge and research in our field. The GRAS uses a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of 5,000 world universities in respective subjects, including research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality, and international academic awards.  More than 1,900 universities across 104 countries and regions are eventually listed in the rankings. Twenty-eight CEE Scholars Ranked World’s Top 2% Scientists Released by Stanford University

A total of 𝟐8 𝐂𝐄𝐄 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 have been listed among 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝟐% 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, with 𝟕 of them ranked among the 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝟏𝟎𝟎 of their respective fields. To highlight a few remarkable achievements, Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, and Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, ranked 3rd and 8th in the world respectively in their own areas of specialty. The report was prepared by a team of experts led by Prof. John Ioannidis of Stanford University. According to the team, the publicly available database provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). Prof. Ben Young Receives Kurobane Lecture Award

Congratulations to Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) & Chair Professor of Steel Structures, for receiving the Kurobane Lecture Award at the 18th International Symposium on Tubular Structures (ISTS 18) held by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 17 to 20 October 2023. This Symposium has a long-standing reputation for being the principal showcase for tubular structures and the prime international forum for discussion of research, developments and applications in this field.  Inaugurated in 1988 at ISTS 8, the Kurobane Lecture Award is a prize recognising international achievement and acclaim in the field of tubular structures. This esteemed award takes the form of a Keynote Address to the ISTS, known as the "Kurobane Lecture". Prof. Young was invited to deliver the 11th Kurobane Lecture at the ISTS 18 in recognition of his outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of tubular structures, and his continuing encouragement to expedite and widen research activities on tubular structures. During this lecture, Prof. Young shared his insights and expertise on “Cold-Formed High Strength Steel Tubular T- and X- Joints” with the attendees.

CEE Research Excellence on Green Building Materials

CEE scholars have long been striving to achieve sustainability and carbon neutral goals in the construction industry by developing advanced green building materials. Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, has led his team in researching waste recycling solutions since the beginning of 2000. They have developed eco-blocks by utilizing the construction waste, demolition waste and recycled glass and transforming them into low-carbon construction materials. The eco-blocks will be applied to various development projects which reduces carbon emission and maintains sustainability in the community. Prof. Jian-Guo Dai, Professor of CEE, together with his research team, have invented an Eco-friendly Smart Sub-ambient Radiative Cooling (SSRC) Coating, “Umicool”. UmiCool is an eco-friendly, long-lasting, self-cleaning, low-cost polymeric radiative cooling coating which can reduce the interior temperature of infrastructure under direct sunlight while consuming zero electricity. InnoCarnival 2023, with the theme “Go Smart! Go Tech! Go Green!” will be held on 28 Oct – 5 Nov 2023 in Hong Kong Science Park, where both Prof. Poon and Prof. Dai researches will be exhibited. Dr Tony Sze Being Invited to Speak on Now TV’s programme “Now Report”

Dr Tony Sze, Associate Professor of CEE, was invited by Now TV to speak on “Now Report (經緯線)” programme (ViuTV Ch.99) broadcasted on 22 October 2023 (Sun). Different automated driving systems are trialed in many cities in China Mainland and North America, however, safety of automated driving systems is still of major concern. Dr Sze shared his insights into the challenges of developing autonomous vehicles and the hurdles for the wide application of automated driving systems in Hong Kong, particularly complicated road design, traffic operation, and frequent pedestrian activities on the roads. The PolyU Info Day 2023 was successfully held on 21 October 2023 (Saturday). A big thank you to all the visitors and prospective students who spent time to engage in the wide range of activities organized by CEE and a heartfelt gratitude to all our Academic Staff and Student Ambassadors for their dedication and passion in sharing their experiences. Dr Barbara W.Y. Siu, Scheme Leader of BEng(Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development [JS3120], introduced the Undergraduate (UG) programme admission information and career prospects of the industry during the information seminar, attracting more than 260 participants in total to discover our UG programme; while Prof. Tak Ming Chan and Dr Yi Jiang, Programme Leaders for MSc in Civil Engineering [31077] and MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering [31078] respectively, provided first-hand admission details regarding the Taught Postgraduate Programmes (TPg) offered by CEE to the attendees, helping them to acquire insights for their next learning journey. Guided tours to the Structural Engineering Research Lab, Industrial Centre (IC) and Noise and Safety Lab were also arranged. CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary – CEE Cultural Day cum BBQ Dinner Gathering

To celebrate the CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary, we organized a delightful event - the CEE Cultural Day cum BBQ Dinner Gathering at Tai Mei Tuk on 6 October 2023 (Fri). We are thrilled to announce that around 100 participants, including UG students, academic staff, and general staff, joined us for this incredible event to embrace diverse cultures.   We were honoured to have Dr Andy Y.F. Leung, Associate Head (Partnership), and Mr Lin Hoi-yung, Instructor, leading an informative field study at Plover Cove Reservoir. They shared the history and development of the reservoir, creating an engaging learning experience. We captured some unforgettable moments during a meaningful photo session, and your smiles truly brightened the day.   The highlight of the evening was a delightful BBQ dinner gathering, where participants had the opportunity to mingle, network, and build new connections. It was heart-warming to see everyone enjoying a delicious barbecue together.   We would like to express our gratitude for the active participation of all participants. Your contributions have undoubtedly made this event truly memorable. It was a fantastic evening, and we are excited to organize more such events in the future to further connect with all of you. CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary - Staff-Student-Alumni Badminton Competition

The CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary - Staff-Student-Alumni Badminton Competition was successfully completed on 23 September 2023 (Saturday). It was an incredible display of sportsmanship and teamwork among our CEE community. The event brought together our CEE staff, enthusiastic undergraduate & postgraduate students, and supportive alumni in a spirit of friendly competition. The energy and enthusiasm on the court were truly inspiring and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to four judges, eight line judges, and all the participants who made this event a resounding success. Congratulations to the Champion (CEE Staff Team), 1st Runner Up (CEE Students Team) and 2nd Runner Up (CEE Alumni & Student Team).
