Our department held two departmental retreats in the first half of 2025. The retreat served as an important milestone in fostering a culture of academic excellence, collegiality, and innovation within the Department. Through meaningful discussions and knowledge sharing, faculty members strengthened their commitment to enhancing teaching quality, research impact, and student success.

COMP Retreat in Jan 2025

The first retreat took place on 6 – 7 January 2025 at the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel. Aside from the updates on the departmental developments shared by management members, this retreat focused on discussing strategies for improving academic advising, student satisfaction, securing research funding and enhancing the quality of PhD studies. Prof. Andy CHUN, Professor of Practice, delivered a talk on “Bridging Academia and Society: Leveraging AI for Impact” at the retreat.

COMP Retreat in Jun 2025

The second retreat was held on 18 June 2025 at the Sheraton Guangzhou Nansha Hotel, followed by the PolyU COMP – HKUST (GZ) INFH Research Student Conference on 19 June 2025. Prof. CHEN Lei, Dean of the Information Hub at HKUST (Guangzhou), was invited to give a talk titled “Data Science for AI and AI for Data Science”. His presentation provided COMP academic and teaching staff members with insight into the synergies between these two research areas. Besides, Prof. LUI Sha, COMP Departmental Academic Advisor and Donald B. Gillies Chair Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, shared practical advice on grant proposal preparation and promoting best R&D practices. Last but not least, discussions were held to address assessment issues that aim at advancing the quality of teaching and learning.
