CEE awarded Yoon Duk Kim Young Researcher Award from SSRC, AISC

Congratulations to SELVARAJ Sivaganesh, postdoctoral fellow under the guidance of Dr Tak-Ming Chan and Prof. Ben Young, who is selected to receive the 2023 Yoon Duk Kim Young Researcher Award from Structural Stability Research Council, American Institute of Steel Construction.   This Yoon Duk Kim Award recognises students or early career professionals who have made a noteworthy contribution to the advancement of structural stability.

FCE Awards for Outstanding PhD Theses 2021/22

Congratulation to two CEE PhD students , Dr WANG Xiaoyu and Dr PENG Xiang, for receiving the FCE Awards for Outstanding PhD Theses 2021/22. The award comes to confirm the significance and innovation of their academic performance in research subjects, as well as the presentation skills and responses to questions from the Working Group of the Faculty Research Committee.

PolyU CEE Webinar Series: Towards circular construction: Quantitative sustainable design for recycling and reusing anthropogenic resources

Dr Mark S.C. Hsu delivered a seminar with the topic of “Towards circular construction: Quantitative sustainable design for recycling and reusing anthropogenic resources” on 28 September 2022. It was co-organized with HKIE Civil Division and RCRE.

CEE PhD student was awarded the Student Best Paper Award of ICOSSAR2021-2022

Jing QIAN, a PhD student supervised by Dr You Dong, was recently awarded the Student Best Paper Award of the 13th International Conference on Structural Safety & Reliability (ICOSSAR2021-2022).   The International Association for Structural Safety & Reliability (IASSAR), founded in 1969, is one of the leading international academic organizations in the field of civil engineering. The International Conference on Structural Safety & Reliability (ICOSSAR), organized by IASSAR, is held every four years on a rotating basis across continents. It is the largest and highest level international academic conference in the field of engineering reliability. On ICOSSAR2021-2022, 440 scholars from 30 countries registered for this conference and over 5000 participants attended the live broadcasting platform.

CEE Students awarded The HKIE Prize for Outstanding Engineering Students 2021/22

Congratulations to two CEE students, Mr TING Guan Wei and Mr WONG Sze Yin, for receiving the HKIE Prize for Outstanding Engineering Students 2021/22. The prize recognizes the excellent academic achievements of engineering students from Higher Diploma and Associate Degree courses, and to encourage them to pursue their careers in engineering profession.

New joiner - Dr Wang Meng

Dr Wang Meng obtained her Ph.D. degree (2020) in Environmental Science from the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr Wang worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PolyU from 2021 to 2022. Dr Wang’s current research interest focuses on 1. Signatures and spatiotemporal variation of organic tracers in urban and rural areas; 2. Characterization and source apportionment of organic compounds in PM2.5 based on different mass spectrometry methods (e.g., AMS; CIMS; EESI; GC-MS, HPLS-MS); 3. Machine learning techniques to decouple the effect of meteorology and evaluate the effectiveness of air pollution control policies. Dr Wang has joined us on 15 Sep 2022.

CEEAA Scholarship 2021 cum CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary Logo Design Competition Award Presentation Ceremony

The CEEAA Scholarship 2021 cum CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary Logo Design Competition Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 14 Sep 2022 (Wed). Ir Edmond Wong, President of CEEAA, and Ir Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of Department, were invited to deliver a speech to kick off the ceremony. The CEEAA Scholarship recognizes students with outstanding achievements and active participation in extra-curricular activities. Apart from the CEEAA Scholarship, the awards of CEE/CSE 50th Anniversary Logo Design Competition were also presented to the winners. For more details about the design, please visit here. MOU Signing Ceremony between PolyU and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC)

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) was successfully held on 7 Sep 2022.   Prof. Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation), represented PolyU and Mr Kan Jun, Chairman, represented CRBC completed the MOU signing formalities. The partnership strengthens the collaboration between CEE and CRBC by leveraging their respective expertise in research and engineering production.   The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prof. Xiangdong Li, Dean of FCE, Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, and other honoured representatives from CEE and CRBC.

CEE student was awarded the Newton International Fellowship

Dr Pin ZHANG, PhD student supervised by Prof. Zhenyu Yin, defensed on July 2022 and was recently awarded the Newton International Fellowship. He will go to the University of Cambridge and the Alan Turing Institute to continue his research work.   The Newton International Fellowship Scheme was established in 2008 to select the very best early career researchers from all over the world across natural sciences (approximate 25 annually) and humanities (approximate 12 annually) and enable them to work at UK research institutions for two years. Newton International Fellowships are made available by the Royal Society and British Academy.

Prof. C.S. Poon Conferred Endowed Professorship and Dr Zhou Chao Appointed as Endowed Young Scholar

The Fourth Inauguration of Endowed Professorships cum the First Inauguration of Endowed Young Scholars was held on 31 Aug 2022 to pay tribute to distinguished scholars for their outstanding academic and research achievements, and to demonstrate the support and recognition from the community to PolyU for its research excellence.   Under the Endowed Professorship Scheme, Ir Prof. C.S. Poon, Head of Department and Chair Professor of Sustainable Construction Materials, was appointed as Michael Anson Professor in Civil Engineering.  It provides resources and support for Prof. Poon’s team to propagate the research culture that Prof. Anson championed early on, turning ideas into real solutions.   Dr Zhou Chao, Assistant Professor, was appointed as Tsui Tack Kong Young Scholar in Civil Engineering under the first launch of Endowed Young Scholars Scheme, which supports early-career academics and drives innovations that bring positive and long-term changes to the world.   Congratulations to the two CEE members!
