New Joiner - Dr Rongpan HU

Dr Rongpan Hu obtained his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2013 and Ph.D. degree in structural engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2020. Prior to joining PolyU as a Research Assistant Professor, Dr Hu worked as an Associate Research Fellow at Shenzhen Academy of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. His current research focuses structural health monitoring, digital twins of civil structures, structural condition assessment, and performance-based earthquake engineering. Dr Hu has joined us on 16 April 2024.

New joiner - Dr Tao LIU

Dr Tao Liu graduated from Tsinghua University with a primary BEng in Environmental Engineering and a secondary BEc in Economics in 2015. He received his PhD degree from the Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) at The University of Queensland in 2020. After this academic milestone, he took up a Postdoctoral position from 2020 to 2021, and a Research Fellow position from 2022 to 2024, both at The University of Queensland, during which he secured the Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship only eight months after the PhD. His research focuses on the development of innovative solutions for urban water and wastewater management, through the effective integration of fundamental science and applied engineering. Dr Liu has joined us on 28 March 2024.

CEE PhD Student Received “Young Scientist Award - Best Oral Presentation” in the 8th National Bioaerosol Symposium

Congratulations to Miss YU Jinyan, CEE PhD student supervised by Dr Ling Jin, whose presentation titled “Contribution of Endotoxins to PM2.5-induced Inflammatory Effect” has received “Young Scientist Award (Best Oral Presentation)” in the 8th National Bioaerosol Symposium. The symposium was held from 15 to 17 March 2024 in Shanghai, China.

Primary School Outreach Programme – Fanling Assembly of God Church Primary School

CEE welcomed around 100 passionate primary students from Fanling Assembly of God Church Primary School on 20 and 21 March 2024. The students had a fantastic time exploring CEE labs and participating in a hands-on workshop. The students first visited the Air Pollution Lab, where they learned about the causes and effects of air pollution. Through interactive demonstrations and experiments, they gained a deeper understanding of this pressing environmental issue. They also ventured into the Geology Lab, where they delved into the fascinating world of rocks, minerals, and earth sciences. The students attended an inspiring lecture on carbon neutrality, followed by an Air Purifier Model DIY Workshop, where the students got their hands dirty and built their own air purifiers. Guided by CEE experts, the students learned about air filtration and purification while creating their personalized devices. Overall, the departmental visit was filled with fun, learning, and hands-on experiences. CEE looks forward to hosting more engaging and educational events in the future to nurture sustainable young minds.

Primary School Outreach Programme – CEE Inspires Young Minds with Educational Visits

CEE recently welcomed over 40 enthusiastic primary students from Chung Sing College and Marymount Primary School on 20 February 2024 and 6 March 2024 respectively for two engaging departmental visits. These visits aimed to ignite a passion for environmental protection in the young minds and to fuel their imagination when discovering the exciting world of civil engineering. The students enjoyed a diverse program that included an inspiring lecture on air pollution and low carbon life, shedding light on the importance of sustainability in today's world. They also had the opportunity to visit the Air Pollution Laboratory, where they participated in the "Gas Pollutant Measurement for Incense Burning" experiment, gaining hands-on experience in environmental monitoring. The students also had the chance to get creative and build their own air purifiers during the Air Purifier Model DIY workshop. These activities not only fostered their interest in civil engineering but also empowered them to take practical steps towards creating cleaner and healthier environments. CEE is dedicated to nurturing young talents from a tender age, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive impact on the world. With the support of the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) on CEE’s Clean Air Education Programme, CEE is able to raise awareness and inspire the next generation to protect the environment and building a sustainable future together.

Dr Tony Sze Being Invited to Speak on TVB’s News Programme

Dr Tony Sze, Associate Professor of CEE, was invited by TVB News to speak on ‘’A Closer Look (時事多面睇)’’ (TVB News Ch.83) - “Tram Stop Have No Stop?!”  on 7 March 2024 (Thu). In Hong Kong, some tram stops do not have pedestrian refuge. Passengers must get on and off the trams in the middle of traffic. Safe and accessible tram stop design is a major concern. CEE Industry Partners Networking

The CEE Industry Partners Networking Activity was successfully hosted on 5 March 2024 (Tuesday) at the Alumni Atrium of PolyU, bringing together over 50 industry partners, academic staff and students for an evening of network cultivation and relationship building. The event was kicked off with a warm welcome by Prof. Xiangdong Li, Dean of the FCE, who shared inspiring remarks with the audience, followed by Prof. Chi Sun Poon, Head of CEE, who provided an insightful introduction to the department, highlighting its key initiatives and the latest developments of our teaching and research activities. The activity also featured a student sharing session, with three current students sharing their university experiences and career aspirations. The Industry Partners Networking Event was a valuable platform for fostering connections between academia and industry, creating opportunities for future partnerships and knowledge exchange. We extend our gratitude to all participants for making this event a great success and we look forward to continued collaborations and success within the CEE community.
