The Department of Language Science and Technology (LST) has a comprehensive research profile in language sciences and linguistics. Our work spans from investigating the biological and cognitive foundations of language to its societal function in multilingual environments and its transformation through technology. The Department pursues interdisciplinary research that integrates core domains of linguistics with computational methods such as artificial intelligence and big data analytics, seeking to generate outcomes with applications in communication, education and healthcare. Alongside research activities, the Department engages in translating scholarly insights into practical contexts, offering clinical services, educational outreach and technology development that serve local and international communities.
Research Direction
The Department of Language Science and Technology (LST) strives
- to strengthen our reputation in empirical, inter-disciplinary research;
- to enhance our research capacity in computational and corpus linguistics, as well as language, cognition, and neuroscience (LCN);
- to extend international collaborations, and
- to nurture young scholars to secure external grants and produce high-quality outputs in high-ranking journals.
Programme Aims
The programme aims to cultivate socially responsible, future-ready, and globally engaged scholars capable of making original and impactful contributions to the fields of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, cognitive neuroscience of language, speech-language pathology, translation and interpreting, language education and assessment, bilingualism and communication, Chinese and East Asian Linguistics, and related interdisciplinary domains.
Through rigorous and specialized training, the programme aims to equip graduates with comprehensive knowledge, advanced research methodologies, and critical thinking skills to address complex challenges in their fields. Graduates are prepared to conduct independent, groundbreaking research, publish scholarly findings adhering to the highest academic standards, and engage in meaningful dialogue with international scholars.
The programme also emphasizes the development of effective communication and teaching skills, enabling graduates to disseminate their knowledge and mentor future generations of students. By fostering intellectual flexibility, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning, the programme prepares scholars to lead with integrity, adapt to evolving global challenges, and contribute to societal advancement through language science and technology.
