Prof. Guofeng ZHANG, Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics at PolyU, served as a keynote speaker at the International Conference and Exposium on Quantum Sensing and Metrology (ICEQSM) 2025, held in Kolkata, India, from 10 to 13 September 2025.

Prof. Zhang delivered a keynote talk titled “Optimal Control of Flying Qubits” on Day 2 of the conference. The talk featured a general framework for optimal control of flying qubits. According to the conference’s Abstract Book, the framework is based on “quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs) that describe the flying qubit input-output relations actuated by a standing quantum system”, for instance, “a superconducting qubit or quantum dot”. The Abstract Book said that the framework “lays the foundation for the design of flying-qubit control systems from an optimal control point of view, within which advanced optimal control techniques can be incorporated for practical applications”.

The conference covered eight themes: “Sensors and devices for quantum metrology”, “Quantum sensor-based microscopies and spectroscopy”, “Light-based sensors: quantum-enhanced imaging systems, quantum lidar, quantum radar”, “Solid state quantum sensors: NV centers in diamond, quantum dots”, “Atom-based quantum-enhanced sensors: cold atom interferometers, atomic clocks, atomic magnetometers, Rydberg sensors”, “Theoretical quantum estimation, sensing and metrology”, “Superconducting sensors” and “Novel phenomena for quantum sensing”.

The conference featured keynote talks, technical sessions and interactive panel discussions on cutting-edge topics in quantum sensing and metrology. The programme included invited talks from leading experts, poster sessions, and dedicated time for networking and collaboration.

The event was organised by the Centre for Quantum Engineering Research and Education (CQuERE) and TCG Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology (TCG CREST) in Kolkata. The 2025 event gathered more than 35 speakers from academia, industry, and research institutions worldwide.
