PolyU and Huawei Cloud Hong Kong (Huawei Cloud) have signed an MoU to deepen collaboration in synergistic research, technology commercialisation, start-up incubation and the establishment of global innovation ecosystems.
The collaboration focuses on three core areas: research and innovation commercialisation, joint development of overseas start-up incubation and ecosystems, and research talent development. Leveraging Huawei Cloud's ecosystem, certification system and resource networks, it aims to accelerate the global commercialisation of PolyU’s research outcomes, support startups in expanding into the Asia-Pacific market, and enhance PolyU faculty and students’ practical and translational capabilities in AI. Through Huawei’s resources, PolyU is proud to be the first university from Hong Kong to establish an official incubation programme base in Singapore, in collaboration with local authorities and ecosystem partners.
As an extension of the collaboration, PolyU took part in the "University-Industry-Research Ecosystem Collaboration" round-table discussion at the "Huawei Developer Conference 2025" on 21 June. In the event, PolyU discussed with world-class universities, such as Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, on innovative models for research and innovation commercialisation and research talent development.
On the same day of the round-table discussion, the award presentation ceremony of the "Huawei Developer Competition 2024" was held. PolyU-nurtured start-up "LifeSparrow"—founded by two alumni from the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering—stood out as the only Hong Kong team to win the Grand Prize. The company uses AI to revolutionise search and rescue operations as well as asset monitoring. It is exploring to apply their technologies in broader industrial scenarios.
