The "Shape Your Future at PolyU Mechanical Engineering" was successfully held on June 12, 2026. The event brought together around 50 current HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination) students, providing them with valuable insights into the mechanical engineering field. The event featured top graduates and industry experts who shared their stories and industry insights.
In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Su Zhongqing, Head of the Department, expressed enthusiasm for the gathering and highlighted the importance of connecting students with industry professionals. He provided an overview of the Departments and introduced the field of modern mechanical engineering, explaining that it is no longer seen as a dirty profession and is not limited to traditional manufacturing jobs. Prof. Su encouraged attendees to actively engage with the speakers and peers, as these connections could play a significant role in shaping their future careers. His remarks established a positive tone for the afternoon, cultivating an atmosphere of inspiration among all participants.
Following the opening remarks, Ir C K Tam, who serves as the HKIE Mechanical Discipline Advisory Chairman and Managing Director of The Jardine Engineering Corp., Ltd. He shared his real-life journey as a mechanical engineer, using his involvement in multiple projects across Hong Kong to illustrate how mechanical engineering is vital and applicable across diverse fields in society, while emphasizing that upcoming trends will continue to make it important. He also provided insights into the engineering career path in Hong Kong, including guidance on becoming a professional member of HKIE. Additionally, Ir Alan Kwok, Director of Industrial Design in Precision Robotics (Hong Kong) Limited, shared an overview of how surgery robots work, their applications and key mechanical engineering concepts integrated into robotics development.
The event also provided a unique networking opportunity, allowing students to interact with professors, speakers, and student representatives in small groups. Members of the Executive Committee (ExCom) from the PolyU Mechanical Engineering Student Association (MESA), along with the Captain of the PolyU E-Formula Racing Team, shared first-hand experiences about their studies, campus life, and vibrant extracurricular activities.
A delightful tea buffet was offered, creating a comfortable and relaxed setting for participants. This informal setting encouraged meaningful discussions about career paths, academic advice, and industry experiences. We eagerly look forward to more sharing events in the future!
