Guest Speaker: Prof. LOW Kin Huat

Prof. LOW Kin Huat is currently a Distinguished Professor and Chief Scientist at the Civil Aviation University of China. He obtained his BSc degree from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, and his MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Waterloo, he joined Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, where he remained until 2023.

Professor Low is the author or co-author of approximately 438 journal and conference papers across the fields of structural dynamics, vibrations, robotics, and unmanned aerial vehicle traffic management. He has held Associate Editor roles for more than 15 international journals. From 2019 to 2025, he has been annually recognized as one of the world's top 2% most-cited scientists in the Stanford University annual list.

His research trajectory—from solid mechanics and structural dynamics, through robotics and UAV control, to recent work in UTM and AAM—provides a unique micro-to-macro perspective that bridges fundamental mechanics with complex aerial systems. This rich experience positions him ideally to speak on the opportunities and challenges that the Low-Altitude Economy presents for the mechanical engineering community.

Abstract

The rise of the Low Altitude Economy (LAE) might, at first glance, appear as merely an aviation centric or AI driven phenomenon. Yet, for mechanical engineers, it is a remarkably natural extension of our core expertise—not a departure from it. Given the recent maturity of robotics and AI—fields that have attracted intense industrial interest and become commercially competitive—this talk aims to encourage professors, researchers, and postgraduate students to view LAE as an ideal application testbed for their ongoing work in solid mechanics, structural dynamics, robotics, manufacturing, and control. With over 40 years of research experience spanning solid mechanics, structural dynamics, vibrations and impact, robotics, UAV dynamics and control, and more recently UTM and AAM, the speaker hopes to share his thoughts on the opportunities and challenges of LAE related R&D with the audience. The goal is neither to chase a new field, nor starting from scratch, but to refresh, challenge, and elevate our existing research agendas through this timely and physically demanding frontier. Several flagship research programs and key projects will be presented during the talk, and an interactive Q&A session will be held at the end.
