Abstract

As a subclass of metamaterials, elastic metamaterials (EMMs) open a new chapter of creating man-made composites with unusual properties. In this presentation, we demonstrate our research work on elastic metamaterials in recent years. We begin with design and identification of EMMs. A 1D EMM of a Euler–Bernoulli beam with lateral local resonators and its bandgap analysis are presented, followed by a few proposed 2D EMMs of plates attached with resonators of concentrated mass in different arrangements and their bandgap analysis.  We further introduced our study on EMM performance improvement, specifically the results of EMM structure design using Nelder–Mead optimization method and Machine-Learning-Aided numerical methods for efficiently obtaining optimized geometry showed superior properties and wider complete band gaps. We also demonstrate our design, fabrication and testing of some auxetic metamaterials. Finally, we present the research work we intend to do in the near future.
