Summary

Electrochemical energy storage systems, such as Li-ion batteries, are playing a pivotal role in the large-scale utilization of renewable energy technologies, including solar and wind power. However, one of the key challenges in developing long-life Li-ion batteries is the rapid and rational evaluation of battery lifespan. In this seminar, I will present our latest findings on the degradation mechanisms and accelerated testing methods for LFP/graphite batteries in smart grid applications. Our research demonstrates that battery degradation is not only affected by thermodynamic and kinetic factors but also rationalized through distinct electrochemical reaction mechanisms. These include the consumption of electrolyte additives and the side reactions of Li dendrites with the electrolyte at the microscopic level

Yong Yang is Distinguished Professor in Chemistry in the State Key Lab for Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces at Xiamen University. He is Board Members of International Battery Materials Association (IBA) and International Meeting of Lithium Battery (IMLB), served as Editor of J Power Sources(2015-2024) and the IBA President (IBA,2024-2025) . Prof. Yang received his BSc (1984) and PhD (1992) in Physical Chemistry from Xiamen University. After joining the university’s faculty in 1993, he was promoted to his current position in 2005. He was a Visiting Scholar in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Lab at Oxford University from 1997-1998 and Director of Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Research Institute at Xiamen University between 2008-2018. He published 500+ papers in referred journals with 40000+ citations (H=114, Google Scholar) and as leading editor of two books. He obtained several awards such as ISE Fellow (2026), ECS Fellow (2024), Technology award from Battery Division, ECS (2020), Distinguished Contribution Award from Chinese Electrochemical Society (2017) and Technology Award from International Battery Materials Association (2014). Over the last 33 years, he mentored more than 150+ postdocs, PhD, and MS students. His recent main research interests are Li-ion battery ageing and degradation analysis for smart energy storage applications and solid state batteries
