Summary

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), as a low-cost, safe, and sustainable alternative for large-scale energy storage, have garnered widespread attention. The application of traditional intercalation-type cathode materials is a widely studied topic in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. However, due to common issues such as material crystal structure collapse and transition metal dissolution, the performance release of these materials in aqueous zinc-ion batteries has been challenging.

In this report, I will share our recent work on Manganese and vanadium-based cathode materials, including the adoption of doping strategies, defect engineering, and interface design to address their common issues in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. In addition, we have shared various advanced characterization techniques, including the use of synchrotron radiation absorption and CT tomography in aqueous zinc-ion batteries, hoping to help everyone better and more thoroughly understand the design principles of cathode materials. Finally, we have shared some commercial explorations in the design of large pouch cells. These research findings provide new insights into the design of electrode materials for constructing high-performance and long-lasting aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Professor Guanjie He is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at University College London, UK. His main research area is aqueous electrochemical energy storage and conversion materials and devices. As a corresponding author, he has published over 100 SCI papers in international authoritative academic journals, with over 21000 citations and an H-index of 82. He serves as an associate editor for Battery Energy journal and an editorial board member for journals such as Green Energy Environ., Sci. China Mater., Nano Res. Energy, Energy Environ. Mater., Adv. Powder Mater., and J. Met., Mater. Miner. In 2023, he was elected as a Fellow of the Materials, Minerals and Mining Society of the UK, and in 2024, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2025, he received the Harrison-Meldola Medal for Early Career Commemoration and was awarded the Journal of Materials Chemistry Lectureship, and in 2026, he was honored with the IChemE Nicklin Medal.
