EEE PhD Student Mr. LIU Shangming Wins Top Honor at National Optical Fiber Sensors Conference

EEE PhD student Mr. LIU Shangming has won the prestigious Best Oral Presentation Award (First Class) at the 13th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference in China (OFSC-2025). The conference, held in Wuhan from September 20 to 22, 2025, is recognized as China’s premier academic event in the field. Mr. LIU’s paper and presentation, titled “High-sensitivity optical fiber-tip hydrogen sensor based on a serpentine-spring optomechanical microresonator,” were selected as the top presentation among numerous competitors. The award is the highest honour at the conference, with only one First-Class award being presented each year. This groundbreaking work is a result of a General Research Fund project led by his supervisor, Prof. ZHANG A-ping, with valuable contributions from Prof. JIN Wei. This honour not only recognizes Mr. LIU's outstanding research work but also consolidates the university's influence in the field of optical fiber sensing.

The pioneering “Ultrafine High-Sensitivity Optical Fibre Sensor”—honored with dual awards at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. —is poised to redefine precision in cochlear implant surgery. Addressing a critical limitation of traditional rigid glass fibers used in delicate procedures, Professor TAM’s team engineered an innovative, flexible, ultra-thin plastic optical fiber sensor. This technology provides surgeons with real-time, high-precision feedback during complex inner-ear surgeries. Its design earned it two prestigious honours at the exhibition: the “Thailand Award for the Best International Invention & Innovation” and a “Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury.” This breakthrough offers unprecedented control over electrode placement and simultaneously monitors the contact force of the electrode, enhancing surgical navigation while dramatically reducing the risk of tissue damage. These advantages translate into profound benefits for patients: safer procedures, optimized hearing restoration through precise implant positioning, and expanded treatment possibilities. PolyU Patents Achievement Award 2024

We are delighted to share that the Department won both the Top Patents Filing Award and the Most Active IP Commercialisation Award in the “Department” Category. This outstanding repeat success highlights EEE's sustained excellence in pioneering research and its proven effectiveness in translating intellectual property into real-world impact.  The PolyU Patents Achievement Award honours exceptional contributions to patent filing and IP commercialisation, celebrating the University’s commitment to innovation and knowledge transfer. Prof. HU Haibo represented the Department at the award presentation ceremony on 25 September 2025 to receive the PolyU Patents Achievement Award 2024.

PolyU and Dassault Systèmes establish the first Center of Excellence in Asia Pacific to advance AI + digital twin for material innovation

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Dassault Systèmes signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 17th September 2025. The first Dassault Systèmes Center of Excellence – Dassault Systèmes–PolyU Center of Excellence in the Asia Pacific region was officially established on PolyU’s current Research Centre of Materials Intelligent Manufacturing. This collaboration aims to advance innovation in AI + Materials and AI + Digital Twin, by combining PolyU’s research excellence in AI and robotics for material innovation with Dassault Systèmes’ leadership in digital twin technologies and advanced software solutions. This partnership will strengthen industry–academic international collaboration and support “AI + manufacturing” talent development.   The plaque unveiling of the new Center of Excellence and the MoU signing ceremony were held at PolyU. The unveiling ceremony for the Dassault Systèmes–PolyU Center of Excellence was jointly officiated by Professor Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and Mr Samson Khaou, Executive Vice President, Asia-Pacific, Dassault Systèmes. The MoU agreement was signed by Professor Chi Yung Chung, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of PolyU, and Ms Joanne Li, 3DEXPERIENCE Edu Sales Director, China, Dassault Systèmes, witnessed by senior representatives from PolyU, Dassault Systèmes, and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau. Following this, Mr Samson Khaou was honoured as an Industrial Advisory Board Member of the Research Centre for Materials Intelligent Manufacturing, with the official letter presented by Professor Haitao Zhao, Director of the Research Centre. The ceremony symbolised the official launch of the Dassault Systèmes–PolyU Center of Excellence and marked a significant milestone in international cooperation between academia and industry, connecting Hong Kong with France and the international innovation ecosystem.

EEE Research Student Hana Lebeta Goshu Awarded 2025 IEEE CIS Graduate Student Research Grant

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is delighted to announce that Ms. Hana Lebeta Goshu has been selected as one of only 11 global recipients of the prestigious 2025 IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Graduate Student Research Grant. This highly competitive grant supports innovative research in computational intelligence with significant potential for impact. Ms. Goshu’s project, "3DGS-FuNSTEM: 3D Gaussian Splatting and Fuzzy-Neural Systems for Adaptive STEM Learning," merges cutting-edge 3D vision with fuzzy logic and neural networks. The research aims to revolutionize hands-on STEM education by creating adaptive tools that interpret student interactions and provide responsive, personalized guidance, supporting the worldwide "AI for Education" movement. This accomplishment underscores PolyU's leading role in pioneering applied AI research. We congratulate Ms. Goshu on this exceptional international recognition of her work and its potential to make STEM learning more engaging and accessible.

EEE Teaching Team Wins Silver at eLearning Forum Asia Awards

Our EEE teaching team received the Silver Award in the Community Outreach category at the 2025 eLearning Forum Asia (eLFA) Awards in Thailand. This recognition honours their project titled “Promoting Digital Literacy in Developing Regions for Sustainable Development.” Driven by the goal to close digital barriers, the overseas service-learning programs led by Dr. Pauli Lai’s team feature the Tanzania Program. In this initiative, PolyU students conduct 5-day IT/tech workshops for local primary and secondary school children, covering modern technologies like Microbits, robotics, AI, and 3D printing. These sessions spark curiosity and transform barriers into opportunities. Since 2019, these programs have expanded to Cambodia, Vietnam, Tanzania, and Indonesia, helping establish local technology learning centers that remain operational. Through innovative pedagogy and community empowerment, these hubs consistently transform digital barriers into lasting opportunities. The eLFA Awards, launched in 2019, recognize outstanding Asian eLearning practices, advancing education through shared institutional expertise. The Community Outreach Award specifically honours those who passionately leverage technology and grassroots engagement to enhance education for underserved communities.

First Place award of Student Design Competition at International Microwave Symposium 2025 (IMS 2025)

The International Microwave Symposium 2025 was held from June 15th to June 20th in San Francisco, USA. Congratulations are extended to Mr. BI Jingyun, Mr. HUANG Yixuan, Mr. WANG Yanze, and Mr. ZHAO Ruxuan, under the supervision of Dr. Xinyu Zhou, for winning first place in the IMS 2025 Student Design Competition – PCB Based Bandpass Filter. The awarded research work is titled "Frequency-Query Enhanced Electromagnetic Surrogate Modeling with Edge Anti-Aliasing Pixelation." The conference was organized by IEEE MTT-S and is recognized as the flagship conference in the field of RF and microwave circuits and integrated circuits. It serves as a platform for high-quality global collaboration and exchange between academia and industry for the application of RF and Microwave. Against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s vigorous efforts to establish itself as a global innovation and technology hub, the achievements of PolyU's microelectronics team represent a significant milestone within the local innovation ecosystem. Hong Kong demonstrates strong capabilities in advanced hardware design and plays a vital role in advancing semiconductor technologies.

Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering 2025

The enhanced three-level Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award (OPAA) that was introduced last year has achieved remarkable success. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) is delighted to announce that the new round of the departmental OPAA 2025 is now open for nominations until 31 July 2025 (Thursday), and we encourage all eligible individuals to participate.   The departmental OPAA aims to publicly recognize outstanding graduates of EEE for their remarkable professional achievements and significant contributions to the community as well as their alma mater. The departmental awardees will be officially honored by the department and will be nominated for the Faculty Awards or above.   Award Categories and Selection Criteria. The selection for the Department Award considers two major criteria: (1) Support and Contribution to PolyU and (2) Achievement in respective area.   Three achievement areas serve as a framework for assessing nominee’s achievements in the concerned areas, including Professional Achievement, Entrepreneurial Achievement and Scholarly Achievement.   An Outstanding Young Alumni Award is available for alumni who are at or under the age of 40.   The Award will be conducted at three levels: Department level, Faculty/School level, and University level. The recipients of the Department Award will be nominated for the Faculty Award, and all Faculty/School awardees will be considered for the University Award.   Eligibility The nominated candidate must be a graduate who has successfully completed a full-time or part-time program offered by PolyU (or its forerunners: Hong Kong Government Trade School, Hong Kong Technical College, and Hong Kong Polytechnic) that led to an academic award accredited by the respective institution.   The proposer can be a PolyU graduate, Honorary Graduate, University Fellow, PolyU staff member, current PolyU Council and Court member, or current Advisory Committee member. There is no limit to the number of nominations that each proposer can submit. The Best Student Paper Award – Mr. Wang Peng

The Department is thrilled to announce that our PhD student, Wang Peng, has received the Best Student Paper Award at the 29th International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors (OFS-29) (https://ofs29.org), held in Porto, Portugal from 25–30 May 2025. OFS is the world’s leading conference in photonic sensing and fiber optic technologies, bringing together top researchers and industry experts since 1983.  Wang’s paper, “Ultra-miniature optical fiber accelerometer based on a 3D microprinted proof mass-integrated Fabry-Pérot micro-interferometer,” was selected for an oral presentation and ultimately won this prestigious award. This achievement is the result of collaborative work under Professor AP Zhang’s GRF projects, with key support from co-investigator Professor HY Tam. Congrats again to Wang for this outstanding accomplishment!

First Runner-up in Men’s Gold Cup at Stanley International Dragon Boat Championship 2025

Congratulations to the EEE Dragon Boat Team on winning the first runner-up in the Men’s Gold Cup, the highest division, at the Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships on 31 May 2025! The team also won the championship in the Men’s Silver Cup at the Stanley Dragon Boat Warm Up Races on 3 May 2025. Comprised of EEE alumni and students, the team has dedicated months of effort to train for the Tuen Ng Festival dragon boat races. Our staff, alumni, and their families, including Professor C.Y. Chung, Head of the Department, united together in the Stanley Main Beach to cheer for the team this year.
