Despite its great potential advantages, CPT technology is far behind IPT technology and has not yet been applied in the market. In this talk, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the research area of CPT technology. Specifically, this talk will cover the following key topics: 1) The development of CPT technology; 2) Difference between CPT and IPT and challenges CPT faces; 3) Design and implementation methods of CPT converters for specific applications. Speaker’s Bio: Ying Liu received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2014, 2016, and 2023, respectively. She also received a Ph.D. degree in power electronics from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, in 2021. She joined Harbin Institute of Technology in 2023, where she is currently an Associate Research Fellow of electrical engineering. Now she also serves as a visiting Research Fellow at City University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on wireless power transfer, including capacitive power transfer and its applications, inductive power transfer for implant medical devices, underwater power supply and so on. Seminar on "Looking into WiFi Channel State Information (CSI): From Signal Processing Foundations to Practical Applications" by Dr Ruiqi Kong

It inherently contains a mixture of multipath propagation, hardware distortions, and motion information, presenting significant opportunities for cross-domain applications. In this talk, I will present my research on harnessing this potential through a fusion of signal processing and deep learning. The focus will be a deep dive into two projects on physical-layer fingerprinting, where I demonstrate how to extract device-specific hardware imperfections from CSI to generate robust RF fingerprints for accurate device authentication and identification. Furthermore, I will briefly introduce our work in WiFi sensing, which exploits delay-domain signal processing to recover motion information. Collectively, these efforts establish a comprehensive model-guided framework for translating raw CSI data into practical solutions for wireless security and sensing. Speaker’s Bio: Ruiqi Kong is an incoming Postdoctoral Fellow in Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She recently completed her Ph.D. at CUHK under the supervision of Professor He (Henry) Chen. Her research focuses on the advanced analysis of wireless signals to tackle challenges in wireless security and sensing. EEE Research Postgraduate Student Orientation

The RPg Orientation was held on 11 September 2025, welcoming over 70 newly admitted research postgraduate students for the 2025/26 academic year. Organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), the session provided students with an opportunity to connect with faculty members and begin their research journey. Prof. C.Y. Chung (Head of Department), Prof. L.P. Chau (Chair of the Departmental Research Committee), and Prof. Kenneth Lam (Director of Research Postgraduate Studies) were present to share departmental updates, outline key study milestones, and introduce the support systems available to RPg students. Chief Supervisors were also invited to attend, reinforcing the collaborative foundation of postgraduate research and setting the tone for a productive academic experience ahead.

As research in this area is progressing at a rapid rate, this seminar introduces some of the recent advances in IPT based WPT technology. New circuit and magnetic modelling techniques that can be employed to investigate different types of compensation circuits and coil structures are discussed, presenting results. Wireless V2X concept and optimal control strategies that allow for regulated power transfer with impedance matching for maximum efficiency, regardless of large variations in coupling and load, are also presented with the key advantages. Speaker’s Bio: Udaya K. Madawala graduated with a B.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) (Hons) degree from The University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and received his PhD (Power Electronics) from The University of Auckland, New Zealand as a Commonwealth Doctoral Scholar. At the completion of his PhD, he was employed as a Research and Development Engineer by Fisher & Paykel Ltd, New Zealand, to develop new technologies for PM motor drives. At present as a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer & Software Engineering at University of Auckland, New Zealand, he leads a group of researchers focusing on a number of power electronics projects that are related to energy and wireless EV charging systems for V2X applications. Udaya is a Fellow of the IEEE, and has both industry and research experience in the fields of power electronics and energy. He has served both the IEEE Power Electronics and Industrial Electronics Societies in numerous roles, relating to editorial, advisory, conferences, administrative & technical committees and chapter activities. He was the General Chair of the 2nd IEEE Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC)- 2016, held in New Zealand, and is also the Chair of SPEC Steering Committee and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Industrial Electronic Society. He is the recipient of the IEEE PELS Milan M. Jovanović Award for Power Electronics Emerging Technology and the University of Auckland Research Excellence Medal in 2024. Udaya, who has over 300 journal and conference publications, holds a family of global patents related to wireless power transfer (WPT) technology and power converters, and is a consultant to industry.
