Teaching Seminar - "Nurturing Workplace-Ready Professionals in the Age of AI"
On 21 May 2026, Dr Richard Lui, Senior Lecturer, hosted a teaching seminar for our academic and teaching staff titled "Nurturing Workplace-Ready Professionals in the Age of AI." The session focused on how generative AI is rapidly becoming part of professional life, and how agentic coding and AI-assisted development are changing what employers look for—especially in entry-level roles.
The seminar sparked lively discussion among staff about how to better support students as they prepare for these changes, with an emphasis on bridging the gap between university learning and the realities of today's job market. Dr Lui introduced a teaching tool he developed, GPTutor, and its real use in virtual patient simulations for optometry clinical training.
The event wrapped up with a forward-thinking conversation about how COMP is updating its curriculum and rethinking both teaching and assessment to keep pace with technological advances. The department remains committed to giving students the AI literacy, practical know-how, and ethical grounding they need to succeed amid rapid changes in the industry.
