Biography

Prof. Tin Yuet TING is an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Panel Chair of Sociology, Anthropology, and Philosophy in the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Prof. TING’s research lies at the dynamic intersections among AI infrastructure, data technologies, mobile social media, the digital economy, and networked politics. Funded by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong SAR, among others, his major research projects examine the (trans)formation of publics in contemporary mobile and datafied environments. His other research, also funded by the RGC, investigates unequal pathways to platform careers amid algorithmic volatility, while critically analysing the uneven global and regional development of AI infrastructure.

Prof. TING received the Joshua Feigenbaum Award from the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy, USA, the Early Career Grant Award from the RGC, Hong Kong SAR, and the Advance HE Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy, United Kingdom. At The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he was a recipient of the Best Teaching Award from the Department of Applied Social Sciences and the Faculty Prize in Teaching from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences.

Prof. TING currently sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Information Society and is a Board Member of the Research Committee on Futures Research of the International Sociological Association. He previously served as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Research Committee on Futures Research of the International Sociological Association, and as the Secretary of the Hong Kong Sociology Association during the 11th and 12th Councils.
