Biography

Prof. Xiaomin LI received her B.S. (2014) and M.S. (2017) in Psychology from Beijing Normal University and her Ph.D. (2021) in Family Studies and Human Development from the University of Arizona. She joined the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an Assistant Professor in July 2021.

Prof. LI's research examines how individuals, couples, and families navigate adversity and achieve well-being across the life course. Her work focuses on family processes, financial literacy, relationship dynamics, and mental health, with particular attention to how financial capability and power dynamics shape relational and psychological outcomes. Supported by competitive external funding, she is currently conducting studies in Hong Kong and mainland China to understand how financial literacy and empowerment can be promoted among young adults, women, and families facing socioeconomic disadvantage.

To date, Prof. LI has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles in leading journals such as Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Family Relations, Sex Roles, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, and The Journals of Gerontology: Series B. Her research has received multiple Best Family Financial Well-being Paper Awards from the National Council on Family Relations and other competitive recognitions. She serves and has served in editorial leadership roles including Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member for journals such as Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Family Relations, and Journal of Family and Economic Issues.
