Dr John MOK

Research Assistant Professor

Biography

Dr Mok is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before joining PolyU, he taught at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (formerly The Open University of Hong Kong), and HKU SPACE.

Dr Mok's research agenda is based on cultural sociology, sociology of religion, and anthropology of ethics. One of his ongoing projects examines how Roman Catholic practitioners in China make ethical evaluations in an authoritarian situation since Reform and Opening-up. Its analytical framework is based on the “tool kit” approach introduced by the cultural sociologist Ann Swidler, as well as a school in anthropology which studies ordinary ethics. Another developing project investigates industrial modules and production culture in Hong Kong cinema.

Dr Mok's work has been published in high-ranking journals including Mobilisation, The China Journal, Political Research Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary China, and Asian Survey. He has also frequently answered journalistic inquires on Sino-Vatican relations.

Dr Mok currently serves as an executive board member of the Society for Hong Kong Studies.
