Biography

Dr LAM is a registered social worker and a certified philosophical counsellor, currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Social Sciences.  Before joining PolyU, he accumulated a decade of professional experience as a social work practitioner in frontline, supervisory and managerial positions, and as a fieldwork supervisor in various higher education institutions.

Grounded in his work with non-refoulement claimants and refugees, Dr LAM has developed extensive counselling and casework experience with individuals, couples, and families across diverse cultural contexts. His practice has engaged with a wide range of human concerns, including parenting, relationship difficulties, domestic violence, child maltreatment, substance use, medical issues, end-of-life care, and mental health challenges.

Dr LAM’s academic and professional orientation is deeply informed by phenomenology, existential philosophy, and logotherapy. He is particularly interested in how individuals make sense of lived experience and discover meaning amid suffering and uncertainty. He places strong emphasis on existential themes in his casework, supervision, teaching, and research, including meaning in life, freedom to respond, responsibility, and the human capacity for transcendence. He aspires to promote the integration of phenomenological and existential perspectives within helping professions.
