Biography

Dr Jing Joann GONG is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Before joining PolyU, she was an Assistant Professor at Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Part-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong. Dr GONG received interdisciplinary training across early childhood education, social work, and special education. She obtained her PhD in Early Childhood Education from The University of Hong Kong and a Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, with a concentration in Children, Youth, and Families. Her doctoral research was recognised with the 2022 Patrice L. Engle Dissertation Grant from the Society for Research in Child Development.

Dr GONG’s research aims to understand how multiple systems shape the home learning environment, family functioning, and child development. Her work focuses on the development and validation of culturally appropriate measures of the home learning environment and child development; regional and socioeconomic disparities in early learning experiences; and the impact of migration on family functioning and children’s early learning and development. Her research is aligned with global policy priorities and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Family Psychology, and Early Education and Development.

In terms of practice, Dr GONG is a registered social worker in Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland and a qualified kindergarten teacher in Hong Kong. She previously served as a family support coordinator in a Hong Kong kindergarten and has contributed to early childhood intervention projects in collaboration with universities and NGOs in Hong Kong and the United States. This combination of academic and professional training informs her research, which generates evidence to support policies and practices that benefit children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds across diverse contexts.
