The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) jointly held the scholarship presentation ceremony for the 2025/26 SINOPEC “Cleaner Energy Better Life” Outstanding Student Award Scheme (the Scheme) on 30 March 2026. Established in 2022, This year marks the fourth consecutive year that SINOPEC has operated the dedicated scholarship at PolyU. For the first time, the Research Project Scholarship has been introduced to commend PhD students with outstanding performance in joint university-enterprise research, forming a multi-tiered and comprehensive award system which demonstrates the enterprise’s strong emphasis on nurturing young research talents.
Guided by the philosophy of “Cleaner Energy, Better Life”, the Scheme strongly supports PolyU in advancing talent development, research and innovation. The Scheme’s Undergraduate Scholarship recognises undergraduate students with excellent academic performance, while its Research Student Scholarship is awarded to PhD and master’s students, as well as undergraduates from the College of Undergraduate Researchers and Innovators, who have published outstanding achievements in top academic conferences or journals. With the aim of supporting young talents through university-enterprise collaborative innovation and promoting the sustainable development of the energy industry, the new Research Project Scholarship is exclusively for PhD students who have displayed outstanding performance in joint research projects between PolyU and SINOPEC. Their achievements are in cutting-edge energy technology fields such as low-carbon catalysis, hydrogen detection, new energy storage materials and structural engineering.
In his address at the ceremony, Prof. Jin‑Guang Teng, President of PolyU, expressed sincere gratitude to SINOPEC for its long‑standing and strong support for PolyU’s education and research development. He noted that the scholarship scheme not only inspires students’ passion for innovative research and learning, supporting PolyU in nurturing socially responsible professionals and leaders with a strong sense of national pride and a global perspective; but also establishes a solid bridge for deep collaboration between the university and industry, serving as an important hub for fostering synergy and joint talent development between the two sectors.
Mr Xiong Xiaoyang, Chief Representative of SINOPEC in Hong Kong, stated in his speech that SINOPEC’s commitment to “Cleaner Energy Better Life” is highly aligned with PolyU’s motto of “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”. 2026 marks the first year of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan. Under the State’s support for Hong Kong in building an international hub for high-end talent, greater opportunities have been created for deeper cooperation between the two sides. He looks forward to further strengthening collaboration with PolyU in three key areas: talent cultivation and utilisation, scientific research and development, as well as think tank and intellectual support. He welcomes more PolyU graduates to learn about and join SINOPEC, and hopes that PolyU will continue to provide more “PolyU solutions” to support SINOPEC’s transformation and development.
The ceremony presented the Research Project Scholarship and Undergraduate Scholarship. Awardee representatives shared their learning and research experiences, thanked PolyU and SINOPEC for their valuable support and development platform, and pledged to repay society with further valuable academic and research results. PolyU also presented certificates of appreciation to SINOPEC (Hong Kong) Limited and SINOPEC Kantons Holdings Limited in recognition of their long‑term commitment and support for Hong Kong’s education sector.
