Summary

In this talk, Prof. Seungwoo Je will introduce Beyond Real, his research vision for creating experiences that extend beyond the familiar realities people encounter in everyday life. He will present two directions of his work. "New Experience" explores how XR/VR/AR, haptics, and tangible interfaces can create unfamiliar sensory and bodily experiences by reshaping perceptions of weight, presence, embodiment, and the body. "Inclusive Experience" explores how to overcome barriers faced by people with diverse bodies and sensory abilities through cross-modal interaction and alternative forms of communication and expression. Together, these directions aim to broaden how people perceive, understand, and connect with the world.

All PolyU PhD students and SD staff are welcome. No registration is required. Seating is available on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Prof. Seungwoo Je is an Assistant Professor at the School of Design, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), where he leads the Immersive Design Research Group. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Startup KAIST. His research focuses on VR/AR/MR, haptics, and tangible user interfaces. His work has been published in leading HCI venues, including ACM CHI, ACM UIST, ACM DIS, IEEE ISMAR, IEEE TVCG, IJHCS, and IJHCI. He is also an award-winning designer, with recognition including the iF Design Award, and holds international patents in China, Korea, and the United States. He frequently serves on the program committees of major HCI conferences, including ACM CHI, ACM UIST, and ACM DIS.
