Congratulations to the PolyU’s sports teams who clinched 15 championships, seven titles of first runners-up and seven second runners-up in the 2023-24 Inter-Collegiate Competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. They were also crowned the Yearly Men’s and Women’s Overall Championships for the sixth consecutive year.

 

In addition, 18 team members were named Most Valuable Players or Individual Champions. Karen Tam, a student of our Master in Physiotherapy programme, was also honoured as Sportswoman of the Year. The accolades recognise their impressive performances in their respective events.

 

The team members’ achievements are the results of their devotion as well as the University’s support. They demonstrate the success of PolyU’s holistic education promoting whole-person development.

 

At PolyU, we are devoted to the holistic development of students, and we encourage a vibrant sporting culture on campus. The University has been offering various flexible admission schemes to student-athletes who excel in various competitions, supporting them in their pursuit of both academic and athletic excellence.

Meanwhile, PolyU has admitted 13 outstanding athletes through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme initiated by the University Grants Committee in the 2024/25 academic year.

 

The newly admitted elite athletes have excelled in sports including athletics, equestrian, fencing, football, judo, squash, table tennis, triathlon and wushu, and will be enrolled in a wide range of undergraduate programmes.

 

Among the admitted athletes is Hong Kong Premier League player Poon Pui-hin, who scored the decisive goal in the men’s football quarter-finals and made history with semi-final berth for Hong Kong at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou last year. He will be studying English and Applied Linguistics.

 

In addition, squash athlete Leung Ka-huen, the silver medallist in the girls’ team at the Asian Junior Squash Team Championships last year, will undertake the Physiotherapy programme. Wushu athlete Tai Lok-ming, who captured gold and silver in the junior boy’s sanda category at the Acropolis International Wushu Open Tournament and Asian Junior Wushu Championships respectively last year, will pursue Applied Social Sciences.
