Summary

Energy planning relies heavily on modeling and scenario analysis to select appropriate resources and technologies while ensuring a balance between supply and demand. Significant challenges persist in energy modeling, including the integration of temporal and spatial dimensions, managing uncertainty, enhancing transparency, ensuring model fidelity, and incorporating social and behavioral aspects. Despite advancements, energy models remain fragmented, still tend to follow deterministic approaches, and frequently fail to capture the dynamic feedback effects between policy, market development, and socio-economic changes. This talk will provide an in-depth discussion of these challenges, emerging methodologies, and future research directions to improve energy modelling for a sustainable and resilient energy future.

Associate Professor
Department of Production and Systems, School of Engineering, University of Minho, Portugal

Dr. Paula Ferreira is Associate Professor at the Department of Production and Systems, School of Engineering, University of Minho, and Researcher at the ALGORITMI Research Centre. Since October 2024 she is the Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre. Her research interests primarily lie in energy planning, socio-economic impact assessment of industrial and energy systems, risk analysis, and project evaluation in alignment with sustainable development goals. She is the author of over 90 papers published in international journals and book chapters, most of which are in Q1 journals indexed in SCOPUS/WoS, totaling more than 200 publications. She has been appointed as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the ENERGY Journal (Elsevier) in January 2024, and she has also been serving as a subject editor for Economy and Environment since 2017. Additionally, she is a member of the Editorial Board of several other international journals, including The International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning, AIMS Energy, AIMS Environmental Science, Smart Energy (Elsevier), Electricity (MDPI) and Journal of Industrial and Production Engineering. She has also edited 8 special issues for international journals such as Energy, Environment Development & Sustainability, and the International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning, in collaboration with colleagues from national and international research institutions. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3712-4803
