Summary

The Japanese aviation market has been changing drastically in the last decade. This seminar provides the recent history of domestic and international markets including the impact of COVID-19, the progress of airport privatization, the competitiveness of low-cost carriers to full-service carriers and high-speed railway in the domestic market, the impact of open sky policies, how to survive the regional air service, and carbon neutral measures of airlines and airports.

Shinya Hanaoka is a Full Professor at the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Society, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. He received a Ph.D. from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. He has worked as a Researcher at the Institute for Transport Policy Studies in Tokyo, an Assistant Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, and a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. His research interests include air transport, maritime transport and transport logistics. He has published about 100 papers in international journals. He is a member of Networking Committee on Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), Steering Committee and Scientific Committee of World Conference of Transport Research Society (WCTRS), and a Treasurer of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS).
