Abstract

The talk is about how recent advances in brain science may provide new insights for strategic management and strategic thinking.  The paper describes four brain structures—the hippocampus, amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex, and prefrontal cortex—in conjunction the two nervous systems—the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system—and how they interact to effect strategic thinking and decision-making.  Three propositions are proffered that provide a more nuanced model of strategic decision-making than is currently available in strategic management with extant models of decision-makers.  This new model of decision-makers is comprised of the effects of physical and ego preservation along with associate thinking (PEPAT).  With this new model, several new areas of research in strategic management and strategic thinking are identified and the value creation opportunities that emerge are discussed.
