I am honoured and excited to receive the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2017. I would first like to thank Professor Daniel Lau, Head of the Department of Applied Physics, for nominating me for the award. The origins of my success lie in my study for the Higher Diploma in Applied Science at Hong Kong Polytechnic (the former name of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University). This course provided a wide range of basic physics and engineering knowledge, which has aided my career and professional development over the last 35 years.
I still remember my final-year project on the strength and durability of a composite bamboo/resin material as a substitute for wood, a topic on which few studies had been conducted at that time. My project supervisor, Professor Frankie Shin Dingguo, gave me plenty of freedom and support. He even helped me to send the material to a professional British laboratory to view the molecular structure of the bamboo fibre under an electronic microscope. My final-year project undoubtedly cultivated my willingness and ability to innovate, overcome boundaries and embrace new things.
I firmly believe that technology can make our lives better. In 1995, I founded the information-technology company MTECH Engineering, which provides Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions and consulting services for the construction and manufacturing industries in Hong Kong and China. The company helped the local manufacturing industry to migrate from 2D design and manufacturing to 3D design and numerical-control machining. We also cooperated with PolyU's Department of Mechanical Engineering to set up the Product Design and Analysis Centre and help the electrical home appliance and watch industry to develop a modular and knowledge-based methodology for engineering and product design. The company later extended its activities to the construction industry, working with PolyU's Department of Building and Real Estate to set up the Virtual Construction Laboratory. In cooperation with Swire Properties and Gammon Construction, MTECH completed Hong Kong's first BIM project, a high-rise, grade-A commercial building named One Inland East. In 2003, MTECH and Dassault Systems donated a number of high-end PLM system software packages to PolyU.
The company has developed rapidly over the last two decades, during which it has contributed to a number of large projects, such as the construction of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Bird's Nest National Stadium, the Guangzhou Nanfeng International Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Shenyang New World International Convention and Exhibition Centre, along with several large-scale real estate projects run by Sun Hung Kai Properties. Last year, MTECH won the award for Hong Kong's Most Valuable Company from the prestigious magazine Mediazone in recognition of its provision of 3D technology for the construction and manufacturing industries.
From my perspective, if this award stands for anything, it stands for the union of or alliance among academia, industry and technology. I will continue to support PolyU's development by linking research with technology and application, fostering talent and promoting continuous innovation and development in the information-technology, construction and manufacturing industries to help Hong Kong become a knowledge-based society.

As a graduate of Chemical Technology programme of the Department of ABCT, I am pleased that I have had the precious opportunity to enjoy my university life in PolyU. The programme offers a large variety of subjects that cover both advanced chemistry knowledge and analytical techniques. Graduates can build a solid foundation of chemistry which facilitates our career development or postgraduate study. Apart from academic studies, the department also provides us with overseas summer internship opportunities. This not only allows us apply our chemical knowledge, but also broadens our horizons and gives us a chance to communicate with students and scientists in different places. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the department for offering this valuable programme and her great support during my study.

I would like to thank PolyU and the Department for offering me the opportunity to obtain knowledge beyond textbooks with the abundant chances provided to explore outside Hong Kong during my three-year university study. From the eye-opening Romania developmental exchange programme, the rewarding Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (GDCIQ) internship programme, to my challenging final year project of pharmacological study on Piceatannol, I have undoubtedly acquired new perspectives on my future career. Working as a laboratory technician in GDCIQ, I engaged in the inspection and supervision of import-export food commodities. This experience not only granted me a chance to transfer what I had learnt from classroom to workplace, but also enriched my profile in various food related disciplines. I am proud to have equipped myself with analytical skills, research skills as well as interpersonal skills at PolyU which would definitely be beneficial to my personal growth and career development.

Higher Diploma of Chemical Technology (HDCT) at PolyU is a good choice for those who are interested in chemistry. The programme has provided me an opportunity to learn different aspects of chemistry such as general chemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. These subjects are very practical in nature and helpful for my future career. The professors and lecturers are very helpful in providing academic advice and sharing their experience with us. There is an enjoyable learning atmosphere in the department. After graduated from this programme, I will pursue further study at PolyU and keep exploring to broaden my horizon.

Integrated with both mathematical and financial knowledge, the investment science programme helped me to develop not only theoretical knowledge and quantitative skillset, but also practical and interpersonal skills. As a science student, I learnt far beyond solving equations. From participating in group projects and presentations, I was inspired to come up with creative mathematics/finance related ideas that are really interesting and exciting to me. Besides, we are encouraged to explore different statistical tools and software such as SAS, SPSS, R and Minitab. You have no idea how widely are these software being used in my daily work of validating prices of different bonds and equities now. Moreover, I have been trained to be able to establish insight through analyzing data. This programme has equipped me to pursue career in the banking industry.

Spending three years in the Department of Applied Physics at PolyU meant a lot to me. In particular, I changed my view of science. Instead of the simple factual knowledge that we gained in School, science involves the study and understanding of many interesting and challenging matters in nature. The EP programme emphasises the practical aspect of science and deals with many engineering problems.
During my three years' study, I participated in many student society activities and took part in exchanges to mainland China. From the learning experience that I gained, and through the influence of my professors, I decided to carry on to do scientific research and use my knowledge of physics to contribute to the well being of society. Once we know our goals and dreams, we can move on and never give up as there are many professors and peers supporting us.
