CLC provides a number of Chinese subjects that are tailor-made for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students or students whose Chinese proficiency is at the junior secondary level or below.

Who are NCS Students?
Students will be regarded as NCS students for the purpose of Chinese Language and Communication Requirement (CLCR) arrangements if they meet any one of the following criteria:
1. Their first/native language as non-Chinese stated on the grade report of recognized tests (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, etc.); OR
2. They are admitted with international qualifications without taking any Chinese subject(s) in their secondary/ high school; OR
3. They have taken Chinese B or Chinese AB(SL) in IB Diploma; OR
4. Their NCS status shown on the official proof provided by their secondary school.

For NCS Students Admitted from 2024/25 Onwards 
NCS students admitted from the 2024/25 academic year onwards may be exempted from the CLCR upon admission if they meet any of the criteria listed above and provide the required supporting documents.They may consider taking one CLCR subject from the subject list below to fulfil the credit requirement.

For NCS Students Admitted before 2024/25
NCS students admitted before the 2024/25 academic year are still required to take one CLCR subject to fulfil the CLCR.
Depending on students’ language background and relevant Chinese learning and assessment records, one subject below will be pre-assigned as the CLCR subject.  In addition, a placement test will be conducted at the beginning of the semester to determine the final CLCR subject assignment.

• CLC2151 -- Chinese III (for non-Chinese speaking students)
• CLC2154 -- Chinese IV (for Non-Chinese speaking students)
• CLC2152 -- Chinese Literature – Linguistic and Cultural Perspectives (for non-Chinese speaking students)
