Biography

Dr. Haolun Xu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his B.Eng. degree from Dalian University of Technology, China, and his M.Sc. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Xu obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2020. His research was honored with the DARPA Hard award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and he was also recognized with the Outstanding M.S. Student Award. Dr. Xu subsequently joined BYD as a senior researcher, focusing on advanced chassis control and fault-tolerant control for intelligent vehicle systems. He has made significant contributions to the research and development of intelligent wire-controlled chassis systems in the automotive industry. He spent over six years at BYD Auto Industry Company Limited as a principal engineer and was a pioneering scientist in the BYDs Intelligent Chassis and Vehicle Motion Control Group. Dr. Xu holds more than 50 patents worldwide, including five U.S. patents. He was a recipient of the Young Elite Scientist Sponsorship Program awarded by the China Association for Science and Technology and held the professional title of Automotive Functional Safety Professional (AFSP), certified by SGS-TÜV Saar. His primary research interests include fluidic and modern control of intelligent chassis systems, multidisciplinary modeling and system integration, mobility motion control, and the application of digital twin technologies for fault detection and performance optimization.
