The Language and Communication Requirements (LCR) aim to help you become bilingual and trilingual and to acquire language skills necessary for effective study and communication.
For students admitted from 2026/27
What you need to do: 4-Year Degree students (admitted from 2026/27) must successfully complete 9 credits of Language and Communication Requirements subject.

For non-Chinese speaking students or students whose Chinese standards are at junior secondary level or below:
The subject “AI as a Tool for Language Learning (For Non-Chinese Speaking Students)” will be pre-assigned to the students with non-native Chinese language background fulfilling any one of the following criteria with appropriate supporting certificate/document (if applicable). They are exempted from fulfilling the Chinese LCR elective requirement but are required to fulfil the English LCR elective requirement. Students may use a CLCR subject or free elective to fulfil the credit requirement. They are also exempted from fulfilling the DSR-Chinese and CR/CW of CAR.
- those with their first/native language as non-Chinese stated on the grade report of recognised tests (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, etc.); OR
- those admitted with international qualifications without taking any Chinese subject(s) in their secondary/ high school; OR
- those taken Chinese B or Chinese AB(SL) in IB Diploma; OR
- NCS status shown on the official proof provided by their secondary school.
Otherwise, the subject “AI as a Tool for Language Learning” will be pre-assigned.
For students admitted from 2018/19 to 2025/26
All students are required to take 9 credits of LCR subjects, including English (6 credits) and Chinese (3 credits).
What you need to do: Complete two 3-credit English language subjects and one 3-credit Chinese language subject as pre-assigned according your language competence. (Click the following icons for more details)
Additional language requirements 'Reading and Writing Requirements' in both English (ER/EW) and Chinese (CR/CW) are embedded in the CAR subjects for further development of your literacy skills. Please refer to the section on CAR for further information.
Important Note:
- If you are admitted as a Senior Year Intakes student or through Articulation Degree Programmes, you may not be required to take the LCR subjects. Please refer to Senior Year Intakes/ Articulation Degree Programme for more details.
