Challenge
The public housing development project at Pok Fu Lam South involved large-scale site formation works, including land platform construction, footbridges, access roads, and associated infrastructure works. The project faced significant challenges in monitoring structural settlement and deformation risks in critical transmission tower structures, while ensuring accurate, real-time assessment of structural conditions to support construction safety and prevent potential failures.
Solution
A customised Smart Monitoring System was deployed, integrating GNSS RTK settlement monitoring and Distributed Optic Fiber Sensors (DOFS) to enable continuous monitoring of structural settlement and strain behaviour. High-definition sensing fibers were installed along critical structural components to collect real-time strain data, which was transmitted to a centralized platform for analysis, threshold-based alerts, and visualization of settlement patterns. This solution provided a highly accurate and intelligent monitoring framework for early risk detection and intervention.
Outcome
The project established a reliable real-time structural monitoring system that enhanced settlement risk detection, improved early warning capability, and strengthened safety management for critical infrastructure works. By combining advanced sensing technologies with intelligent data analysis and automated alerts, the solution contributed to safer construction operations, more effective structural monitoring, and smarter infrastructure management.
