Proposal title: Flourishing Futures – Enhancing Mental Health of Children through Sports and Arts in Primary Schools
Funding amount: HK$2,836,920
Funding scheme: Save the Children Hong Kong (Collaborative)
Project period: 1 December 2025 – 28 February 2029
Project brief: "Flourishing Futures" is a three-year collaboration between Save the Children Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, aiming to enhance socio-emotional learning (SEL) and mental health among primary school children. Targetting children aged 6–12 alongside their parents, teachers and youth workers, the project delivers expressive arts and sports-based programmes grounded in the CASEL framework, focusing on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. A mixed-methods evaluation approach is adopted to measure impacts on socio-emotional competence and parental connectedness. Sustainability is embedded through a train-the-trainer model and resource kits that support long-term integration. By incorporating SEL into curricula, "Flourishing Futures" enhances children's well-being and equips educators to foster supportive learning environments. This holistic approach promotes social connectedness and deepens stakeholders’ understanding of children’s mental health needs, fostering a nurturing and inclusive foundation for child development.

PI: Mr Vincent YEUNG, Lecturer of APSS
Proposal title: URA x PolyU Igniting Social Innovation Competition 2026
Co-PI (all from APSS): Prof. Eric CHUI; Dr Javier PANG; Prof. Vincent CHENG; Dr Rodney CHU; Mr Hei Yin CHAN

Funding scheme: Urban Renewal Authority (URA)
Project period: December 2025 – December 2026

This year, the competition is further enhanced through a strategic partnership with the Urban Renewal Authority (URA), offering students richer learning opportunities and deeper exposure to real-world issues in urban renewal and community development. PI: Prof. Hok Bun KU, Professor of APSS
Proposal title: Practice Research on Advancing Social Work through Regional Demonstration Sites in Chinese Mainland
Funding amount: HK$9,856,300
Funding scheme: Keswick Foundation Limited (Donation)
Project period: 15 January 2026 – 14 January 2030
Project brief:  The establishment of the national Social Work Department in March 2023, followed by the creation of provincial-level departments, represents a watershed moment for the development of social work in China. Social work has now been recognised as a key pillar of national development. At the provincial level, departments are keen to highlight effective models and successful outcomes to both the national department and their counterparts across other regions. Supported by strong government endorsement, this transformation offers unprecedented opportunities to advance evidence-based practices and elevate the quality of social work nationwide. This practice research aims to identify and analyse best practices among 5–6 representative social work organisations across Henan, Guangdong, Guizhou, Shandong, and Xinjiang. Adopting a participatory approach in collaboration with local universities and non-governmental organisations, the study aims to synthesise practical experiences and generate actionable insights to inform future professional practice. Furthermore, it aspires to promote effective service models and amplify their impact on the ongoing development of social work in China.

PI: Prof. Angel LAI, Assistant Professor of APSS
Proposal title: Tai Po Psychological Support Programme to Affected Children and their Families (Healing Space)
Funding amount: HK$792,800
Funding scheme: Save the Children Hong Kong (Collaborative)
Project period: 1 February 2026 – 31 December 2027
Project brief: "Healing Space" is a trauma-informed, person-centered expressive arts initiative designed to support students, teachers, and parents affected by the Tai Po fire. Funded by Save the Children Hong Kong, the project targets 150 primary and secondary students, 100 school staff, and 150 parents. Through expressive arts-based activities, including class-based expressive sessions for students, training workshops for teachers, and parent workshops to deepen understanding of children's emotional needs. The programme aims to enhance emotional resilience, coping skills, and trauma awareness. A mixed-methods evaluation design is employed to assess improvements in psychological resilience, sense of control, school connectedness, and the efficacy of parents’ emotional support. By fostering a safe and supportive school environment, the initiative promotes collective healing and long-term capacity building through ongoing consultation and co-design with school stakeholders, ensuring sustainability and positive mental health outcomes for the broader community.

PI: Prof. Ann LI, Assistant Professor of APSS
Proposal title: Police Force Interactive Educational Theatre and Research Project
Co-PI (all from APSS): Prof. Xiaoqin ZHU, Prof. Diya DOU, Dr Lindan TAN
Funding amount: HK$400,000
Funding scheme: Yan Oi Tong Choi Wong Ling Ling Education Fund (Donation)
Project period: 24 February 2026 – 23 February 2028
Project brief: Drug abuse among young people remains a critical concern in Hong Kong, with evidence suggesting that risk behaviours may begin as early as the upper primary school years, underscoring the need for early intervention. While various anti-drug initiatives have been implemented locally, traditional information-based methods often struggle to engage younger students effectively. To address this gap, the drama-based anti-drug education programme initiated by the Hong Kong Police Force, surpasses didactic instruction to actively engage primary school students in real-life scenarios. This study offers a comprehensive evaluation of the programme by examining students’ perceptions, perceived benefits, and feedback from key stakeholders, including teachers and police officers. In addition, the project will develop anti-drug curricular materials grounded in experiential learning and positive youth development concepts. The findings will inform the creation of more effective, evidence-based prevention initiatives that enhance students’ anti-drug knowledge, refusal skills, and overall well-being. They will also support the Hong Kong Police Force and schools in refining the drama-based programme and cultivating a sustainable, positive anti-drug culture in Hong Kong.

PI: Dr Rodney CHU, Senior Lecturer of APSS
Proposal title: AI and Immersive Technologies for Seamless, Student-centered Learning and Teacher Professional Growth in Secondary Schools
Co-I: Dr Raymond TAM (APSS), Dr Kai Pan MARK (City University of Hong Kong)
Funding amount: HK$1,675,600
Funding scheme: Quality Education Fund
Project period: February 2026 – January 2028
Project brief: This project aims to transform the secondary school curriculum by the integration of AI and immersive technologies, namely the Virtual Assistant TIMS (VAT 2.0) and Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) systems. Anchored in the TIMS framework, the initiative engages approximately 1,500 students across five partner schools. Employing a dual-track approach, it combines inside-curriculum AI chatbot support with outside-curriculum immersive content creation (such as 360-degree videos) to enhance students’ digital literacy and creativity. The project also empowers teachers with an advanced analytics dashboard designed to support pedagogical reflection and continuous professional development. Ultimately, the initiative aims to establish a sustainable, collaborative learning network that facilitates resource sharing and future-ready education.

PI: Prof. Daisy HUANG, Assistant Professor of APSS
Proposal title: A Mixed Methods Evaluation Study of the CareER Career Development Framework 2.0: Enhancing Support Model for Highly Educated PwD during School to Work Transition
Co-PI: Prof. Chi Kin KWAN (City University of Hong Kong)
Funding amount: HK$699,100
Funding scheme: Keswick Foundation Limited (Donation)
Project period: 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2029
Project brief: People with disabilities who are highly educated encounter an array of unique barriers when entering the labour market and sustaining meaningful employment. However, evidence-based service programmes that support their school-to-work transition remain limited. This project employs a concurrent mixed-methods design to evaluate the effectiveness of the CareER Career Development Framework 2.0 in facilitating this critical transition.  As the first comprehensive research initiative on the inclusive employment of tertiary-educated people with disabilities in Hong Kong, it aims to generate robust scientific evidence to inform and advocate for future social service and policy enhancements among key stakeholders such as the government, higher education institutions, and social service providers.

PI: Dr Algae AU, Research Assistant Professor of APSS
Proposal title: Existential Rewards of Routine Action: State Authenticity as a Mediator of Everyday Pro-environmental Behaviours and Meaning in Life
Co-PI: Dr Stephanie Szeto (Saint Francis University), Mr Eddie Ka Wai Yuen (The University of Hong Kong)
Funding amount: USD3,000
Funding scheme: ISSEP Research Grant
Project period: 15 April 2026 – 15 April 2027
Project brief: Global environmental crises demand sustained engagement in pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs), yet the psychological rewards underlying everyday sustainable actions remain underexplored. Grounded in existential philosophy and humanistic psychology, this study examines how private-sphere PEBs, such as recycling and energy conservation, generate momentary experiences of state authenticity and, in turn, enhance existential meaning. Using data from 300 everyday environmentalists in Hong Kong, a ten-day Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) will capture real-time fluctuations in PEBs, authenticity, and meaning. Dynamic Structural Equation Modelling (DSEM) will test within-person effects and mediation pathways to address: (1) Do routine PEBs elicit state authenticity?; (2) Does authenticity predict existential meaning?; and (3) Does authenticity mediate the PEB–meaning relationship over time? By adopting an existential psychological perspective, this study advances understanding of how daily, value-driven sustainable actions foster self-alignment and meaning, informing interventions that promote meaningful engagement in everyday PEBs.
