It is delighted to announce that Prof. ZHAO Jiong, Professor in the Department of Applied Physics, has been conferred the prestigious title of RGC Research Fellow for 2025/26 in recognition of his exceptional research achievements in the field of advanced materials. As part of this honor, Prof. Zhao will receive a fellowship grant of approximately HK$5.5 million over 60 months to support his groundbreaking project, “From slidetronics to twistronics: a twisting platform for dissipationless ferroelectricity”.
His research focuses on Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and two-dimensional (2D) materials, areas where his team has achieved remarkable progress in structural characterisation and physical field measurement using advanced techniques such as in situ TEM, STEM, and 4D-STEM. By combining these methods with material synthesis, device fabrication, and theoretical modeling, the project aims to enhance material quality as well as enable next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. These breakthroughs in 2D and ferroelectric materials are expected to transform future technologies by significantly improving device performance.
The RGC Research Fellow Scheme provides sustained support to exceptional researchers at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong, granting ten awards annually across all disciplines.
Congratulations to Prof. Zhao for his remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment to research excellence.
