Summary

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Prof. XIONG Ren-Gen engaged in early research on MOFs since 1995, especially non-centrosymmetric MOFs, and discovered that the in-situ solvothermal synthesis method facilitated the construction of non-centrosymmetric tetrazole MOFs. He successfully captured the intermediate complexes formed during the synthesis of tetrazoles via a [2+3] cycloaddition reaction, revealing that Lewis acids played a catalytic role akin to that in click chemistry. This achievement was accomplished almost concurrently with the work of the 2022 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, K. Barry Sharpless, and, in certain aspects, even preceded the contributions of the other two co-recipients of the Nobel Prize. By employing this method, Prof. XIONG obtained a series of non-centrosymmetric tetrazole MOFs that were difficult to achieve through conventional approaches and conducted systematic investigations into their crystal structures and physical properties, such as ferroelectricity. These pioneering studies laid a solid foundation for his subsequent development of ferroelectrochemistry.

Prof. XIONG Ren-Gen is from Southeast University and Nanchang University. He was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023. He has won the second prize in the National Natural Science Award three times in 2004 (rank 2), 2017 (rank 1), and 2024 (rank 1), respectively. He has held more than 250 papers as a corresponding author in SCI journals, including Science (6 articles), Science (1 article), Science (53 articles), Science (23 articles), Science (17 articles), Science (5 articles), Science. (8 articles), Science (5 articles), Science (1 article) and Science (1 article). He was cited more than 40,000 times and has an H-index of 106. For more than twenty years, Prof. XIONG has been conducting research focused on acentric compound synthesis and properties, especially in the field of molecular ferroelectrics, which has led to the research resuscitation and frontier of molecular ferroelectric science in China and standing on the international front-line of molecular ferroelectrics, establishing Ferroelectrochemistry.
