Fashion Photographer
Multimedia Design and Technology graduate
Becoming a master doesn’t necessarily require a formal apprenticeship. This young female photographer based in Hong Kong, a recipient of the 2024 DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award, has blazed her own trail in her career. Her journey serves as a true testament to the story of self-taught success.
Ms Michelle Lau Pui-kar, who graduated in 2011 with a Higher Diploma in Multimedia Design and Technology from PolyU, is an independent fashion photographer. She frequently collaborates with internationally renowned brands and magazines, including Balenciaga, Chanel, Longchamp, and Vogue. Her distinctive photographic style is characterised by an innovative interplay between the human form and architectural spaces, harmonising fashion and environment. This unique approach is not the result of meticulous planning but rather stems from a solitary journey that began in adversity.
In 2013, after facing serious challenges in both her family and relationships, Michelle’s life took a pivotal turn. Driven by a desire for change, she stopped crying day after day, quit her job, and embarked on a solo three-month trip across Europe. Previously dependent, this journey of self-discovery proved transformative. Without lavish indulgences, she immersed herself in local cultures, finding profound spiritual insights. Whether it was the neighbour in a small village who excelled in naturopathy or the elderly enjoying the scenery in a German park, Michelle casually pressed the shutter, capturing smiles and moments of tranquillity.
“It was not until this journey that I discovered everyone can define ‘happiness’ in their own way,” Michelle reflects.
Michelle’s spontaneous photography during this time not only captured the vibrancy of life but also presented her with an unexpected opportunity: two of her works, “Back to Basic” and “The Passenger”, were published in the esteemed Italian edition of Vogue. For someone who had just stepped out of the comfort zone, this was definitely an affirmation. “Travelling alone allowed me to deeply understand local cultures and discover their unique beauty. It broadened my horizons, redirecting my life towards independent photography.”
Upon her return to Hong Kong, Michelle took decisive control of her career path. Over the past decade, she has visited more than 30 countries, participated in over 20 media interviews, collaborated with various organisations to hold exhibitions and lectures, and even delivered a talk at PechaKucha, receiving widespread recognition. Additionally, she has shot stills for films such as “I’m Livin’ It”, “Little Q”, and “Line Walker 2: Invisible Spy”. Michelle declares, “Photography is akin to a series of thrilling adventures, allowing me to witness grand spectacles and captivating moments. More importantly, it has taught me never to back down in the face of adversity and to persistently pursue my dreams.”
Building on her knowledge of visual art and design, Michelle practises her craft through photography, conveying emotions and expressing ideas through her images. She shares her own story of inspiration found in solitude and the insights gained from her independent journey. Indeed, getting lost and facing obstacles are integral parts of one’s experience; daring to explore can lead to transformative changes, as the end of a low point may just mark the beginning of a new chapter.
