Some names instantly evoke specific feelings and adjectives.
“Siu Yee” is undoubtedly one such name, synonymous with “happiness”, “humour”, and “positivity.” Affectionately known as “Siu Yee”, Ms Kitty Yuen Siu-yee, a PolyU Design graduate, embodies a multifaceted personality. She seamlessly juggles her roles as a radio DJ, television host, actress, as well as skilled cook – her culinary talents shone through in the popular TV show “Beautiful Cooking Series”, leading her to publish successful cookbooks and earn the beloved moniker “Neighbourhood Gourmet”. Siu Yee’s passion for food has even been the driving force behind her entrepreneurial endeavours, although her business journey has not been without challenges.
Despite her popularity and fame, Siu Yee has faced her fair share of ups and downs in the entrepreneurial world. She bravely opened a homeware shop and a noodle stall, but unfortunately, tough competition and rising rents forced her to close these ventures, resulting in substantial losses amounting to six figures! In fact, starting businesses as a celebrity is no easier than for anyone else; there are critical eyes, and a constant stream of harsh feedback. While others might laugh at her, Siu Yee remains undeterred and even more committed to her beliefs. These setbacks have only strengthened her resolve. She always quips with a smile, “I’m not afraid of losing! What matters most is believing in the opportunity to try.” Well-acquainted with the hardships of entrepreneurship, she frequently shares her insights with aspiring business owners, advising them not to fear failure. “The first year is often a loss-maker,” she says. “It’s crucial to maintain a persistent mindset. Expect difficulties, but when you start seeing small profits, the joy will make it all worthwhile.”
Whether behind the radio decks, entertaining audiences on television, or navigating the business world, Siu Yee radiates her love for life. Her versatile image has its roots in the School of Design at PolyU. As an alumna, she embodies the University’s celebration of versatility and talent. In fact, among her entrepreneurial partners are her fellow classmates. Speaking of her alma mater, the “PolyU Alumni Homecoming Day 2024” on 19 October is a highlight to note, where Siu Yee served as the Master of Ceremony, celebrating enduring friendships with over 7,800 alumni and their loved ones on campus.
With December’s arrival, the streets are adorned with festive lights, filling the air with anticipation. As the year comes to a close, let’s take a moment to find respite with Siu Yee, reflecting on the past, considering the present, and looking forward to the future. In the new year, may we continue to pursue our dreams! Regardless of whether we succeed, staying true to our passions and beliefs will bring the joy of fulfilment, just as Siu Yee does.
