The First Chinese Runner to Complete the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run
MBA graduate

Enduring years of physical and mental challenges, navigating steep mountain trails, and earning accolades in international competitions – he is not a professional athlete but an avid amateur trail runner. Meet Chen Guohui, a recent MBA graduate from PolyU, who shares a deep passion for adventure while pursuing a career in the finance industry.

Guohui's journey began with the 2013 Guangzhou Marathon. Initially, he took up running to improve his lifestyle, but he soon developed a passion for trail running, determined to challenge himself and strengthen his willpower through competition. At that time, trail running in the Mainland was still in its infancy, so Guohui primarily relied on Hong Kong for information about international races and was deeply influenced by the city's trail running culture. He travelled extensively to participate in competitions, gradually accumulating points, qualifications, and strength amidst rolling mountains, unpredictable weather, and icy rivers. Each year, he made steady progress, conquering Mount Fuji in 2015, challenging Mont Blanc in 2016, and in 2017, making history as the first Chinese runner to complete the “Hardrock 100” – often regarded as the most gruelling 100-mile mountain ultramarathon in the United States. From novice to 100-mile competitor, every step he takes is fuelled by his passion for running, embodying a story of challenge and perseverance.

Although a fresh member of the PolyU alumni community, Guohui did not hesitate to join his fellow alumni to participate in “The 19th Ultra-Trail Gobi Race”, held in October in Jiuquan, Gansu. With the support of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Pearl River Delta Alumni Network, graduates from Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Hangzhou, and beyond formed the PolyU Business School Gobi 19 team. As one of China’s largest outdoor races for business schools, the four-day, three-night event was not merely a test of physical endurance but also a profound spiritual awakening. Among the over 5,800 participants on the 121-kilometer trek, Guohui and his teammates faced harsh weather conditions, including sandstorms, heat, and cold, while navigating diverse terrains such as deserts, valleys, and waterways. They persevered, exemplifying the unwavering spirit of PolyU and their commitment to overcoming challenges. On 4 October, not only did these warriors successfully cross the finish line, but they also received three prestigious awards: the Shackleton Award for team spirit, the Endeavour Award, and the Eco-Pioneer Award – a historic achievement for PolyU!

"In these relentless steps," Guohui reflects, "I have realised the value of persistence in training." His story serves as a reminder that ideals provide direction, actions shape the journey, perseverance molds attitude, and striving for excellence is the ultimate pursuit. Although an amateur, Guohui approaches his passion with professionalism and enthusiasm. In him, we see the courage to pursue dreams and the resilience to overcome setbacks, setting an example for future generations and inspiring every alumnus of PolyU.

In these relentless steps, I have realised the value of persistence in training.
