Hong Kong, a kaleidoscopic international metropolis and vibrant melting pot of cultures, is nevertheless often marked by unseen divisions. In such a diverse city, how can true inclusion be fostered so that every individual feels a genuine sense of belonging? PolyU alumni Mr Bosco Ng Chung-lun and Ms Eva Wong Ching-hung have stepped beyond the campus and into the community, armed with innovative thinking, to offer a compelling answer.
Bosco pursued a double degree at PolyU, majoring in Management and Industrial and Systems Engineering, while Eva studied Product Analysis and Engineering Design. Though their academic paths differed, they shared the same passion for the world and for volunteer service. After returning from overseas exchanges, the pair worked together – Bosco as President and Eva as a member of the Campus YMCA of PolyU – to organise community service trips abroad. On the unfamiliar island of Sri Lanka, the optimism of local families rebuilding their lives after the tsunami, the innocent and radiant smiles of children in orphanages, and the warm hospitality of neighbours who welcomed them into festive gatherings left a lasting impression. “We realised that a sincere smile and heartfelt communication possess a power strong enough to transcend the barriers of language and culture.” Coming from an international metropolis, the duo began to reflect anew on the meaning of “cultural diversity” and “global perspective”.
Their profound realisation did not remain a mere memory; instead, it became a catalyst for change. Guided by this aspiration, Bosco and Eva founded WEDO GLOBAL, a social enterprise dedicated to fostering understanding and interaction among people from different cultural backgrounds. In Hong Kong, negative perceptions of South Asians persist in some quarters, prompting the duo to turn their attention to social inclusion. “Why do people often reject them before even attempting to understand?” they ask. “We train members of diverse ethnic groups to become Cultural Ambassadors, enabling them to lead participants into mosques, Sikh temples, and other spaces. They share different facets of their lives, such as beliefs, customs, and cuisine, building vital bridges of cultural understanding.”
Beyond dismantling entrenched stereotypes, the social enterprise has also stood by many Cultural Ambassadors of diverse race, witnessing their transformation from hesitant individuals into confident speakers and workshop facilitators who have successfully integrated into society and secured ideal jobs. In the past five years, more than 25,000 participants from over 300 corporates, organisations, and educational institutes joined WEDO GLOBAL’s community tours, cultural workshops, sharing sessions, and training programmes. The innovation and dedication behind these efforts have earned the social enterprise an array of accolades, including the DBS Foundation Business for Impact Grant, the Grand Award from Social Venture Competition Asia, and The Hong Kong Youth Service Award.
For Bosco and Eva, PolyU was the fertile soil in which their vision took root and a steadfast anchor throughout WEDO GLOBAL’s journey. “When we started our venture, the PolyU Micro Fund gave us a vital boost of confidence. The funding was not merely financial support – it nourished our vision of ‘entrepreneurship driven by compassion, with love at its core'.” With deep gratitude towards their alma mater, the two not only return to campus to share their entrepreneurial experiences with younger students, but also lead their organisation in collaborating with the University. For example, they organised a cultural community tour in Tsim Sha Tsui for the Department of Management and Marketing last October, during which postgraduates and staff were immersed in the multicultural world of Chungking Mansions through all five senses and forged connections with the Muslim community at the Kowloon Mosque, actively promoting inclusion through direct engagement.
Bosco and Eva’s story extends far beyond a single case study in social entrepreneurship. Through their actions, they demonstrate that even the smallest ripples of effort can gather into powerful waves of change, making Hong Kong warmer through understanding, more vibrant through diversity, and truly inclusive through shared humanity.
