Prof. Albert CHAN Ping-chuen, MH
Distinguished Research Professor, Department of Building and Real Estate, PolyU
Building Technology and Management graduate
In the rarified air of academia, it is easy for scholars to become detached. However, Ir Prof. Albert Chan Ping-chuen exemplifies how to remain rooted and focused on noble aspirations through his multifaceted roles. He is not only the Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at the Department of Building and Real Estate of PolyU, but he also serves as Dean of Students, Associate Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, and Able Professor in Construction Health and Safety. Additionally, he is a Chartered Construction Manager, Engineer, Project Manager, and Surveyor. Behind these numerous titles lies a dedicated individual who tirelessly brings innovative ideas and research findings to the industry and society, ultimately benefiting the community.
Before embarking on his academic career, Prof. Chan gained invaluable experience in the construction industry, fostering a deep understanding of its complexities and the people who drive it. He remains committed to his roots, often recalling the construction workers with whom he collaborated on-site. The challenges they faced motivated him to make a positive difference. He established a research group early in his career, bringing together scholars and researchers from diverse disciplines to find solutions to the industry’s pressing issues. One notable project focused on developing anti-heat stress uniforms for construction workers toiling under the harsh summer sun. This endeavour required advanced medical equipment and a significant time commitment from the workers themselves. Prof. Chan passionately advocated for the project to employers, enduring numerous trials and setbacks. Through the unwavering encouragement of his team, their aspirations came to fruition. The resulting workwear became a standard uniform for all government projects, receiving international acclaim at various exhibitions and competitions.
Prof. Chan’s connection to the university runs deep. Since his days as a Building Technology and Management student at the Hong Kong Polytechnic, he has remained committed to its vibrant community. As he articulates, “PolyU has given me some of the most enjoyable moments of my life. I hope to give our students a fruitful university life.” Over the years, he has nurtured talents at PolyU while contributing significantly to society through his research. In July this year, the Government of the Hong Kong SAR presented him with the Medal of Honour, recognising his efforts in construction policy research and nurturing young talents to join the construction industry.
He often tells his students, “If you have ever received valuable knowledge and guidance from me, pass it on and inspire others. That is the best way of giving back.” Prof. Chan embodies the spirit of ambition and action, imparting knowledge and fostering a caring culture. Through his dedication and multifaceted roles, he inspires the next generation and uplifts the community, illustrating that scholarship is not merely the accumulation of knowledge but a profound responsibility and a continuous expression of compassion.
If you have ever received valuable knowledge and guidance from me, pass it on and inspire others. That is the best way of giving back.
