Dr Frederick CHEUNG Fu-wah

Dr Cheung holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Anthropology and brings a uniquely diverse background to education. A licensed commercial pilot with experience in airport ground operations and flight dispatch, he also holds master’s degrees in Inter-cultural Studies and English Language Teaching, as well as a doctorate in Education. With over 20 years of experience in English teaching, Dr Cheung has collaborated with the Education Bureau to support numerous local secondary schools in enhancing their English education. He is a qualified member of the External School Review team appointed by the Bureau. Since 2017, he has also volunteered in secondary schools in various cities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, providing English learning and teaching support to local teachers and students. Dr Cheung is currently Principal of Chinese YMCA Secondary School, where he has established the first AEROSTEM-themed Learning Center in Hong Kong, integrating school-based aviation studies with STEM education. To further strengthen students’ career planning awareness, and with sponsorship from Boeing, he has also founded the first Aviation Early Career Training and Experience Center for secondary school students, offering them practical and diverse learning experiences related to the aviation industry. His efforts in promoting aviation education have been widely covered by local TV and radio channels, inspiring educators across Hong Kong.

Dr Leung has made a lasting impact on education through school-based, territory-wide, and international initiatives. As Vice-Principal of The Salvation Army Tin Ka Ping School, she has led transformative programmes that enhance student engagement and foster their holistic development. Her commitment to global citizenship through cross-border learning has enriched students’ educational experiences and built bridges between communities. As Chairperson of the Hong Kong Extra-Curricular Activities Masters’ Association, she has expanded opportunities for underprivileged students by ensuring equitable access to enriching activities. Her efforts have helped transform lives and have contributed to a more inclusive educational landscape in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Dr Leung’s leadership in promoting gender equity through the Hong Kong Association of Business and Professional Women is equally commendable. By mentoring the next generation of women professionals, she has helped amplify women’s contributions both locally and internationally, fostering an environment in which women are empowered to reach their full potential. As a Committee Member of the departmental alumni association, Dr Leung strengthens alumni ties through networking events and mentorship programmes, encouraging long-term engagement. She also builds partnerships with NGOs to support the growth of both students and teachers. By integrating virtual reality with neurolinguistic strategies, she prepares students for a future in which digital literacy and advanced cognitive skills are essential, equipping them to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Prof. Nartey is Assistant Professor of Discourse Studies in the Department of English at Lingnan University. Educated in Ghana, Norway, and Hong Kong, he is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work examines how discourse shapes social processes, structures, and change. Prof. Nartey’s research focuses on the contextualised forms of semiotic practices through which social conventions, categories, and indexical meanings are constructed, negotiated, and contested within broader social, cultural, racial, economic, and historical conditions. His work adopts a critical and an emancipatory orientation, addressing complex issues such as decolonisation, migration, race, gender, nationalism, and social stratification, and demonstrating how research on language use can contribute to social transformation. He has published extensively in applied linguistics, discourse studies, and communication and media studies. His recent books include Political Mythmaking, Nationalist Resistance, and Populist Performance (Routledge, 2023), Communicative Perspectives on COVID-19 in Ghana (Routledge, 2024), and Communication and Electoral Politics in Ghana (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). Prof. Nartey sits on the editorial board of several journals, and is the Review Editor of Functions of Language.
