WIE Procedures

Students must get an endorsement from the School before the internship begins. The internship may not be counted as WIE training credit if the student fails to get prior approval. A warning letter will be issued and the student will not be considered for any Faculty/AF-sourced WIE internships.

Students can access the AF WIE Internship Application e-form and FB WIE Online System by clicking the highlighted texts below. For enquiries, please contact AF WIE Office via af.wie@polyu.edu.hk.

 

1 week before the commencement of internship

1. Complete and submit the AF WIE internship application e-form with the following documents:

  • Employment contract / Appointment confirmation with employment details.
  • If you are unable to provide any of the above documents, (i) submit the Confirmation of Internship Offer (AF WIE-1) with employer's signature and company chop, (ii) attach a copy of the Business Registration (BR) Certificate and (iii) provide the contact person’s business card with company details.
  • Only for Non-local students working in Hong Kong: No objection Letter (NOL) issued by the Immigration Department.

 2. Upon approval, students are required to complete the application on the FB WIE Online System.

During internship

Keep proper employment records for verification.

After internship

3. Complete Self-Evaluation via the FB WIE Online System.

4. Submit an Employer Feedback Form. For enquiries, please contact AF WIE Office.

 

 Remarks:

  • The procedures apply to all self-sourced, CPS-sourced, and AF-sourced/ nominated internships.
  • Student MUST complete and submit all required documents by the last teaching semester week in which you have completed the internship (i.e. Week 13 for Semesters 1 and 2; Week 7 for Semester 3). Failure to do so may affect the WIE claims or delay graduation.
  • Maximum working hours per week (during the semester) for part-time internship are as follows:

Offshore WIE Sponsorship (OWS)

Offshore WIE Sponsorship (OWS) and incentives cover part of the costs incurred for the non-local internship. Different levels of sponsorship will be granted based on the internship destination and duration. Students must seek prior approval for fulfilment of WIE requirements and apply for OWS through AF WIE Office.  For more details regarding OWS, please refer to CPS’s website: Sponsorships for Offshore Placements | Student Affairs Office (polyu.edu.hk).

 

 

Eligibility of WIE Activities

1. What types of internships can be considered as recognised WIE activities?

Study / curriculum-related workplace experience, and structured and measurable experiences such as:

  • Attend WIE training workshops organised and approved by the School of Accounting and Finance (AF). A maximum of 10 hours could be counted.
  • Hold leadership positions in PolyU/ FB’s student bodies (e.g. FBSA, AFSA). A maximum of 10 hours could be counted.

2. Is there any job list that is not recognised as WIE activities?

Private tutoring (unless working for a tutoring centre) and engagement in dangerous, unethical, or illegal activities will NOT be recognised as WIE activities.

3. Can I use the part-time work or internship sourced by myself for WIE application?

Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must get approval from WIE Director prior to the commencement of the internship. Please refer to the WIE procedures for details.

 

4. I am admitted directly to Year 3 of a 4-year full-time degree programme on an advanced standing basis, can I use my previous work

experience as a recognised WIE activity?

 

Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. A maximum of 100 WIE hours will be accepted for advanced standing students who have a structured and measurable workplace experience prior to joining PolyU. The working period must be within the same year of the student’s admission year.

5. What documents do I need to submit in order to get the School’s endorsement before working for my internship?

Please refer to the WIE procedures for details.

 

6. I am a non-local student, what should I do if I intend to start any jobs / internships in Hong Kong?

Non-local students MUST submit the WIE application with a valid No Objection Letter (NOL) for approval at least 1 week before the commencement of the internship. Do NOT start your internship until your WIE application is approved. Otherwise, it is illegal for you to work in Hong Kong without endorsement from the School.

7. What should I do if I lost my “No Objection Letter” (NOL)?

Please contact the Immigration Department directly for replacement.

8. Is there any restriction on non-local students taking internships in Hong Kong?

According to the Immigration Regulations, non-local students may take up:

  • Part-time on-campus employment for not more than 20 hours per week throughout the year.
  • Off-campus summer internship in Hong Kong from 1 June to 31 August, both dates inclusive.

 

AF-sourced Spring / Summer Internship Programme

 

9. Does the School offer any Fall Internship Programme?

The School only organises Spring Internship Programme (SIP) which normally runs from January to April, and Summer Internship Programme (SUIP) which takes place during the summer break from June to August. Both SIP and SUIP are mainly for Year 2 and 3 students.

 

10. Does the School allow students to work as interns in Fall Semester / Semester 1?

Students are allowed to apply for self-sourced job placement during Fall Semester / Semester 1. Please refer to the WIE procedures for details.

11. If I have already fulfilled my WIE requirements in Year 2, can I still join the AF-sourced Internship Programme in Year 3?

Nominations would depend on participating firms’ requirements, quota and students’ academic/non-academic performances. Priority will be given to students who have not completed the WIE requirement.

 

12. If a student is not nominated by the School to work for a particular firm, can he/ she make the application to the firm directly?

Yes. Students are free to apply to the firms directly.
