In line with the strategic objective of the University for 21st Century, Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) was established in 2016. Aviation focuses on the operation of the aircraft and its related service to provide the rapid and massive transportation in a global scale. Aeronautics focuses on the research and development of cutting-edge technologies with the exploration of fundamental sciences. In the research perspective, AAE aims to stand as a bridge to connect aviation operation and aeronautics research to support the technology developments that are scalable, applicable and transferable from aerospace-related researches to peoples’ daily applications.

Navigation is one of the aerospace sciences supporting automation of several space and aerial vehicles. Navigation is identified as a key science to support the research aim of AAE. To develop and cultivate the research ability, the department has recruited highly talented academic staffs and research staffs from the top universities and industries in the aerospace navigation field.

As the coming of the IoT era, the needs of navigation and positioning are no long limited to the aerial vehicles. In terms of the robotics, the application of unmanned ground vehicles, autonomous driving requires centi-meter level positioning accuracy to secure its operation safety to provide the service that can reduce the traffic fatalities. In terms of the smart devices, such as smartphone and smart wearable device, these devices could enable many innovations if they are a provided positioning service.

To service this need, we form a consortium to synthesize the research energy in the AAE department. The mission of the Consortium of Navigation (CN) is to carry out high-quality research and development to meet the industrial, commercial and community needs of the society.
