Introduction
The Division of Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities was established on 1 January 2026 with a vision to advance human-centered AI to enrich humanity and society through ethical, creative, and interdisciplinary innovation. Its mission is to enhance academic leadership in AI and the Humanities, foster public engagement in addressing the societal impacts of AI within the humanities, drive innovation in teaching and learning, and facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
The Division’s key research areas include: Computational Linguistics, AI for Language Neuroscience, Digital Humanities, AI in Education and Communication, AI Culture and Ethics.

Programme Aims
The programme aims to cultivate socially responsible, human-centred, and AI-ready scholars capable of contributing to and advancing research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the humanities. The programme prepares students to engage with key areas such as Computational Linguistics, AI for Language Neuroscience, Digital Humanities, AI in Education and Communication, AI Culture and Ethics, while developing understanding of the ethical, cultural, and societal implications of AI technologies.
Through rigorous and interdisciplinary training, the programme equips students with computational and humanistic knowledge, AI research methodologies, and critical analytical skills to address emerging challenges arising from the integration of AI and the humanities. Graduates are prepared to undertake independent research, contribute to scholarly discourse, and support the responsible development and application of AI across academic, professional, and societal contexts.
The programme also emphasizes the development of effective communication and collaboration skills, enabling graduates to translate knowledge across disciplines and engage diverse audiences. By fostering intellectual agility, ethical awareness, and a commitment to continuous learning, the programme prepares graduates to adapt to evolving academic and professional environments and to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of human-centred AI and its positive impact on society.
Computational Linguistics
Advances linguistics (a core humanities discipline) through AI-powered analysis of language structure, evolution, and meaning.

AI for Language Neuroscience
Bridges humanities (language, cognition, philosophy of mind) with empirical neuroscience. Advances our understanding of the human "language faculty."

Digital Humanities
Directly advances history, literature, philosophy, and arts through AI tools (digitization, text mining, spatial analysis, cultural analytics).

AI in Education and Communication
Advances humanities pedagogy (how we teach humanities) and media studies (how humanities content is communicated and received in AI-mediated environments).

AI Culture and Ethics
Advances critical reflection on AI itself as a cultural and historical phenomenon. Ensures the humanities "talks back" to technology.

AIH has access to multiple department-level and university-level research facilities and major equipment.
University Research Facility in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience (UBSN)
The UBSN is equipped with state-of the-art equipment that enables researchers to conduct cutting edge and impactful research. The equipment is classified into four categories: Behavioral Neuroscience, Brain Stimulation, Neurophysiology and Neuroimaging. UBSN is a specialized research infrastructure facility that provides a research-dedicated whole-body 3.0T Siemens Prisma scanner in addition to transcranial magnetic stimulation, near-infrared spectroscopy, transcranial ultrasound Doppler, electroencephalogram (EEG), optical topography system, and Mock MR etc.
Centre for Large AI Models (CLAIM)
It is a research-dedicated GPU cluster to meet the high demand for high-performance computing resources necessary for training large AI models, designed to support advanced AI research across various disciplines.
University Centre for AI Computing (UCAIC)
It is a central university-level research facility that provides advanced computing infrastructure and technical services to support data-intensive research and AI development across all academic disciplines.
Speech and Language Sciences Laboratory (SLS Lab)
State-of-the-art Event-Related Potentials (ERP) systems, eye tracker, Electroglottograph (EGG), videostroboscopes, nasometer and audiometers.
Speech Therapy Unit
A clinic with access to subjects diagnosed with symptoms of communication disorder was set up to facilitate empirical research grounded in clinical data.
Priority will be given to PhD applicants.
