Chong Hung Lee (President)

BSc (Hons) Surveying, Year 4

My journey at PolyU has been a transformative blend of growth, exploration, and unforgettable experiences. Over the years, I have been fortunate to immerse myself in diverse cultures, tackle different leadership challenges, and contribute to the community. One of the standout moments for me was participating in an exchange programme at National Taiwan University, where I built cross-cultural friendships and engaged in meaningful exchanges with local children. I was also involved in the EAGLE Global Youth Leadership Programme, collaborating with Nepalese students to design sustainable solutions for their school community, which further deepened my understanding of global citizenship and the importance of service learning.

These experiences have strengthened my adaptability, teamwork skills, and global perspective, and motivated me in continuing to seek ways to create a positive impact. This summer, I look forward to joining another exchange programme in the United States, where I aim to further develop my knowledge of service learning and community engagement. I am excited to learn from diverse perspectives and bring new ideas back to PolyU.

To my fellow students, I encourage you to embrace new experiences with an open mind and a courageous heart. Each step you take, no matter how small, will shape your journey and bring you closer to realising your fullest potential.

BA (Hons) Linguistics & Translation, Year 4

PolyU has provided me with wonderful opportunities to develop and utilise my leadership skills through its well-rounded curricula and platforms for real-world application. Being part of the student organizations has given me practical experience in Organizing events and leading teams. In particular, I have actively engaged in assisting non-local freshmen acclimatise to both PolyU and Hong Kong. My peers and I offer help to these freshmen prior to their arrival in Hong Kong and help with their settlement in Hong Kong. From being served as a freshman to serving freshmen as a senior, I can proudly say that I have learnt and grown a lot.

Yet, I do not plan to stop. I envision using my leadership skills to address pressing social issues and mobilise my peers in volunteer programmes in the future. I also hope the Presidential Student Leadership Award can enable me to participate in more significant projects and inspire others to pursue their leadership aspirations.

Leadership is not only about directing others, it also involves collaboration and being inclusive of diverse perspectives. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Seize every chance and challenge to learn and grow.

During the International Cultural Festival, I represented Myanmar and South Asia by organizing interactive games and sharing our traditions, cuisine, and history, fostering meaningful dialogue and cultural understanding.

As a key member of the International Student Association, I played a pivotal role in organizing our flagship event, Cultural Night, which brought together around 150 students from diverse backgrounds. The event created a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, allowing participants to connect and appreciate our differences. Witnessing the joy and engagement of attendees was an incredibly rewarding experience.

These leadership opportunities have strengthened my confidence, teamwork skills, and ability to inspire others. As I step into my role as an Executive Committee member of the Outstanding Student Academy, I am excited to contribute to its mission of motivating fellow students and fostering a vibrant, supportive community.

I look forward to initiating and supporting innovative projects aligned with the Academy’s goals of driving positive change at PolyU and within the local community. This role marks the beginning of my journey to grow as a leader, inspire others, and create meaningful memories together.

A particularly notable experience was my involvement in a service-learning project in Chengdu, where I served as an educator and counsellor for middle school students. Responsibilities like managing classes, directing rehearsals, and building effective partnerships with teachers and parents taught me that true leadership entails understanding the needs of others and enabling them to succeed. The challenges I overcame during this project strengthened my resilience and deepened my dedication to positively contributing to society, an accomplishment recognised by the Presidential Student Leadership Award.

Looking ahead, I am resolute in applying my leadership skills and engineering expertise to tackle society's most urgent challenges. My goal is to design and construct green, intelligent, and sustainable buildings that offer comfort and improve the quality of life for communities. By integrating advanced materials and energy-efficient technologies, I aim to create a more sustainable world, reflecting the same service and leadership principles that guided me during my social service endeavours.

To my fellow students, I encourage you to seize every opportunity for growth through leadership roles, community service, or academic pursuits. XU Chang

BA (Hons) Chinese History & Culture, Year 3

During my studies at PolyU, I realized that one of the most important essences of leadership lies in inheritance and reciprocity. Leadership is not solely about personal achievements, it encompasses the unwavering support received from others and how that support can continue to benefit those around us.

Take me as an example, through classes and student organizations, I have received immense support and encouragement from professors, peers, and the university community, something for which I am truly grateful. I vividly remember when I first joined the Cang Wu Literature Club and became a member of the subcommittee as a fresher. A senior, who was also the club president at the time, generously provided me with a good deal of suggestions regarding personnel management and event organization. That memory spurred me to not only passively receive but also actively contribute to the community through my role as a student leader, whether on campus or in various voluntary activities.

I am excited to continue my journey as a lifelong leader, inspiring others with my values and vision, while consistently striving to act with integrity and passion.
