Inclusion in Every Bite: Mooncake Workshop

Mid Autumn Festival Workshop
Mooncake workshop

In celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the ExCo members of the Academy teamed up with a diverse group of students for a memorable Mooncake Workshop on 26 September 2025. More than just a festive activity, the event became a powerful, hands-on lesson in inclusion and resilience.

Guided by a visually impaired instructor, everyone learned to make delicious, low-sugar mooncakes with black sesame skins. This choice of ingredients was symbolic, just as the dark skin holds a sweet custard centre, the workshop challenged students to look beyond surface-level appearances and societal misconceptions. The process itself was a lesson: listening carefully and trusting the instructor's guidance, students experienced how profound skill is shared not without sight but with clear communication, patience and trust.

This journey of breaking down barriers together aimed to inspire everyone to recognize their own potential and to build a more inclusive community. We look forward to seeing these future leaders carry these invaluable lessons forward, using them to foster positive change and appreciate the beautiful diversity of our community.

Before attending this workshop, I never thought that visually impaired people would teach us how to make mooncakes. However, after attending this workshop, I discovered that they are just like ordinary people, working hard to bring about great changes and influence in the community.

My perspective towards "these people" shifted from disability to different abilities. Even with impaired vision, the instructor is still skilled at making mooncakes or cookies with rich experience, along with clear verbal and physical demonstrations. In future events, maybe we can visit other social enterprises and try to work with various ability groups.
