摘要

Urban heatwaves and heavy rainfall events are increasing in frequency and intensity in China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) due to climate change and rapid urbanisation. These extremes often occur sequentially, as seen in Hong Kong’s record heat and rainfall in 2023, and are further intensified by anthropogenic air pollution, including greenhouse gases and aerosols. This project aims to provide the first comprehensive assessment of sequential urban heat-rainfall extremes and their interactions with air pollution in the GBA.

In this research salon, Prof. WANG will present the first annual progress of his project, highlighting the spatiotemporal patterns and long-term trends of these compound events, the identification of high-risk hotspots, and the driving mechanisms behind their occurrence.
