DoPAIR and RI Directors recognised as Fellows of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences

Congratulations to Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR), Prof. CAO Jiannong, Director of the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT), and Prof. LI Xiangdong, Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD), for being elected as 2022 Fellows of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). An induction ceremony cum dinner was held on 6 February 2023 at Hotel ICON. HKAES is a professional engineering organisation in Hong Kong dedicated to serving Hong Kong, Mainland China and the region with top-quality engineering expertise. Fellows come from various engineering disciplines and are recognised leaders of the profession with distinguished achievements in engineering sciences or applications. PolyU research project named among top ten innovation and technology news 2022

The research titled “Advanced Vision Sensor with Human Eye Adaptability” led by Prof. CHAI Yang, Associate Dean of Faculty of Science, Professor of Department of Applied Physics, Core Member of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems (RI-IWEAR) and Member of the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT) and Photonics Research Institute (PRI), was selected as one of the “Top Ten Hong Kong Innovation and Technology News 2022”. Organised by the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, the annual selection invites universities in Hong Kong to submit news on Hong Kong developments in innovation and technology and scientific research. Thirty most influential news are shortlisted by an advisory group comprising academics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering in Hong Kong. The final top ten are determined by over 3,360 online votes from members of the public. Prof. SUN Defeng awarded RGC Senior Research Fellowship 2022/23

Prof. SUN Defeng, Leading Member of the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT), Member of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems (RI-IWEAR), Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA), has been awarded under the Research Grant Committee (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme in 2022/23 for his research project “Nonlinear Conic Programming: Theory, Algorithms and Software”. The project will contribute to a broad range of important applications including the 6G wireless communication technology and automatic driving.   Among the 32 nominations received for this year’s exercise, 10 nominees at full Professor rank at  UGC-funded universities were selected for awards. Prof. ZHENG Yongping, DoRISA, awarded 1st BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize Health for Life Award

Prof. ZHENG Yongping, Director of the Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), has been awarded the inaugural BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize in the field of “Life and Health” with HKD 2 million cash prize. Prof. Zheng has obtained more than 50 patents and was ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in rankings compiled by Stanford University in 2021 and 2022. His main research area includes biomedical ultrasound instrumentation, soft tissue elasticity measurement and imaging, 3D ultrasound imaging and smart ageing technologies. The research team led by Prof. Zheng has developed a 3D ultrasound imaging system, “Scolioscan”, which can bring accurate, safe and cost-efficient radiation-free scoliosis assessment. The invention has been applied to clinical assessment in many countries to facilitate early diagnosis and early treatment of scoliosis, and to control the condition using non-surgical intervention. This invention can also be used for the evaluation of ageing spine, including degenerative scoliosis. RISA scholar wins Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards (Hong Kong) 2022

Dr WEN Chunyi, Member of the Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), won the Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award (Hong Kong) 2022 in the biology and medicine category of the Healthy Longevity Global Competition for his project “Senolytic uPAR-CAR-T Therapy for Osteoarthritis”. The competition is organised by the National Academy of Medicine of the United States. It is a series of inducement awards and prizes to catalyse breakthrough innovations to promote people’s lifelong physical, mental, and social health and well-being. There are ten awards in the competition. Each winning project will receive a US$50,000 cash prize for a maximum period of 12 months.

Member of Photonics Research Institute wins the Nano Research Top Papers Award in 2022

Dr TSANG Yuen Hong, Member of the Photonics Research Institute (PRI), received the Nano Research Top Papers Award in 2022 with the co-authored paper “Highly sensitive solar-blind deep ultraviolet photodetector based on graphene/PtSe2/β-Ga2O32D/3D Schottky junction with ultrafast speed.”  The Top Papers Award was established in 2015 by the editorial board of Nano Research and the Tsinghua University Press (TUP). Among the worldwide scientists who have published papers in Nano Research during the two preceding years, the winner is determined by the Award Committee (Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, representatives from TUP) according to the citation in the latest year and the contribution of the paper.

PRI member wins 2022 Optoelectronics Global Conference (OGC) Young Scientist Award

Dr HUANG Dongmei, Member of the Photonics Research Institute (PRI), was selected for the 2022 OGC Young Scientist Award in recognition of her academic excellence. The 7th Optoelectronics Global Conference (OGC 2022) was held virtually from 6–11December 2022. Sponsored by IEEE Photonics Society Guangdong Chapter and hosted by Southern University of Science and Technology, the conference aims to promote international exchange among professionals from various disciplines in academia and industry.

RILS scholars clinch "Research Team of the Year" in 2022 RICS Awards Hong Kong

The research team led by Prof. Geoffrey SHEN Qiping, Member of the Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS), Associate Vice President (Global Partnerships), Director of Global Engagement, and Chair Professor of Construction Management in the Department of Building and Real Estate, won the “Research Team of the Year” award in the 2022 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Hong Kong Awards Since 2019, the research team has been working closely with the Qianhai Authority to enhance collaboration between the construction sectors in Shenzhen and Hong Kong and to put forward solutions to problems encountered by the construction industry of the two places in the cross-border cooperation in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The team successfully drafted two sets of measures: “Administrative Measures for the Registration of Hong Kong Construction Organisations in the Qianhai Shenzhen—Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone” and “Administrative Measures for the Registration of Hong Kong Construction Professionals in the Qianhai Shenzhen—Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone”. These two measures have been adopted by the Qianhai Authority for enforcement. The implementation of the two measures helps break down the barriers to qualification recognition in the construction sector of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. As of 18 November 2022, 409 Hong Kong-based professionals and 45 Hong Kong-based organisations completed their filings in the Qianhai Cooperation Zone. In 2021, the administrative measures were listed by the National Development and Reform Commission as one of the 47 innovative measures and practices and will be rolled out nationwide. The contribution of the research team in promoting collaboration in the construction industry in the GBA has been highly recognised by the Society. The prestigious award not only represents the team’s outstanding achievements in the built environment, but also motivates the team to continue contributing to the infrastructural development in the GBA.
