Database as a Services

Databases are the foundation of today’s businesses. While staff of different levels at the University are increasingly relying on data to make better business decisions, expertise in database management may not be readily available, in particular at departmental level. If your office is facing the same problem, DBaaS (Database as a service) is the answer. DBaaS is a cloud computing service that allows users access to a database without the need to set up their own hardware, install software or configuration. Users can use the database without taking care maintenance or daily administrative operation. Currently ITS provides SQL Server and My SQL as Database as a Service (DBaaS). SQL Server My SQL Due to economy of scale under the Microsoft Enterprise SQL server license subscription scheme we hold, departments can focus on their application, leaving database subscription issue, resilience and data backup issues to us with annual cost much lower than purchasing own software and hardware. Departments can also benefit from all the built-in IT security protections on this platform with data encryption option at no extra cost.

IT Cloud Services

The University Cloud service (UCS) offers departments a secure server hosting platform within a virtual environment. It functions as a flexible rental model, enabling departments to lease virtual servers from ITS—potentially at a more economical rate than procuring and maintaining their own infrastructure. The UCS delivers Virtual Machine (VM) and Container rentals, along with Network Share Folder (NSF) expansions. Hosted in the University's Data Centre, it provides essential computing resources—including compute power, storage, and networking—to support your applications. With UCS, you can easily deploy, manage, and operate your applications while integrating PolyU-specific features, such as PolyU Single Sign-On (PolyU-SSO), the use of the PolyU domain (polyu.edu.hk) for your application web URLs, and PolyU email addresses.
