Campus Security Guard’s Heroic Act Saved a Life at PolyU

On 20 November 2025, the Campus Control Centre received a report of a medical emergency on campus. A team of security guards rushed to the scene, where a student had suffered cardiac arrest after class. Acting swiftly and professionally, Ms. Lau Siu Lai administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), successfully reviving the student before emergency services arrived.   To recognize her courageous and life-saving actions, a commendation ceremony was held, during which a Letter of Commendation signed by the President was presented to Ms. Lau by Ir Dr. Ben Lau, Interim Vice President (Campus and Facilities).   “This incident reminds us how critical emergency preparedness is. Ms. Lau’s professionalism and bravery exemplify the values we uphold at PolyU,” remarked Ir Dr. Ben Lau during the ceremony.   This incident underscores the vital role of CPR and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in emergencies. PolyU has installed over 20 AEDs across campus, and prompt CPR by bystanders can significantly improve survival rates.   Every member of the PolyU community can help make our campus safer.   To learn more about CPR and AED use, please visit: • Hong Kong Fire Services Department: https://www.hkfsd.gov.hk/eng/education/amb_press_to_shock.html • PolyU AED Locations: https://www.polyu.edu.hk/hso/news-and-events/other-resources/automated-external-defibrillator-aed/
